When we think of top culinary destinations in the world, Finland isn’t exactly the first country to come to mind, but that doesn’t mean that it’s without its fair share of epicurean gems. While fish and meat typically serve as staples, Finnish cuisine as a whole includes a wide variety of ingredients that speak to the local tradition and landscape. If you’re a foodie with plans to visit Finland in the works, read on to learn more about some must-try Finnish dishes.

Squeaky Cheese

Known locally as “leipäjuusto,” squeaky cheese is a fresh cheese with a mild flavor and a distinctive, slightly rubbery texture. It’s traditionally served in pizza-shaped slices with cloudberry jam, some cinnamon sugar, or even in a cup of hot coffee, though some restaurants use it as an alternative to feta in salads as well.

Kalakukko

Finland’s position in the Baltic Sea means that seafood is a mainstay in its cuisine, one of the most popular dishes being a savory fish pie called kalakukko. While variations of kalakukko exist throughout the country, they all consist of some type of local fish baked inside a loaf of rye bread. If you’re feeling brave, enjoy it with a tall glass of buttermilk for a traditional Finnish experience.

Pulla

No food tour would be complete without a little dessert, and when it comes to Finnish treats, you can’t go wrong with korvapuusti. Literally translated as “slapped ears,” the Finnish take on cinnamon rolls features a cardamom-infused dough and a sprinkle of pearl sugar for added sweetness. Finns love korvapuusti so much that October 4th is celebrated annually as Korvapussti Day.

Europe is an incredible continent, with so much to see, do, and explore, but it certainly can be expensive. Whether you’re dining out in London or hitting the Parisian shops, European city breaks can quickly rack up to cost far more than you’d budgeted for. That’s why this guide to three of the most budget-friendly European city breaks is so essential – you can experience all that beauty, culture and delicious food, without breaking the bank!

Krakow, Poland

This city is a gem of architectural delights, with structures dating from the medieval period all the way through to 20th century Art Deco. There’s plenty of vibrancy in the streets of Krakow, from the city’s street markets to the bustling art museums and galleries. Accommodation here is comparatively cheap, and you can dine on authentic Polish dishes such as goulash and dumplings for a very reasonable price.

Budapest, Hungary

Hungary’s capital is truly stunning, with enough amazing vistas to rival traditionally scenic cities such as Venice or Rome. Explore its historical monuments, its luxurious spas, and beautiful city streets, all while sticking to your budget easily. Fall is a particularly good time to visit this iconic city, as the streets are a little emptier and the summer’s heat has cooled.

Athens, Greece

Did you know that you can stay in four-star rated hotels in the center of Athens for less than $100 per night? The city has so much to offer, and if you visit off-peak you can bag some serious deals. Try a spring or fall vacation to the Greek capital, and you will be amazed at how much more affordable accommodation and tours are, compared with the high season.

Greece is one of the most visited countries on the planet, with plenty to attract and excite tourists. From its beautiful mountainside olive groves to its temple ruins, to its modern, vibrant cities, it’s hard to run out of things to see and do in this stunning country. Sometimes, it’s good to get away from the beaten tracks – why not check out the city of Corinth, which in ancient times was as powerful as Athens? Nowadays, it’s far less touristy than other areas of Greece, but it still offers plenty to see and do.

Pegasus of Corinth

In ancient Greek myth, the hero who tamed the winged horse Pegasus eventually became king of Corinth. For this reason, the emblem of the winged horse is closely associated with the city, and if you wander around either the modern or ancient sections of Corinth you are sure to spot plenty of statues and images showing Pegasus!

The Corinth Canal

This impressive feat of engineering has an incredible history. The concept was originally dreamt up in the ancient world, with plans being discussed and drawn up in 67AD! However, the scale and difficulty of the task meant that the canal wasn’t actually constructed until the 19th century. Since then, it hasn’t been used by commercial shipping traffic as much as its designers imagined it would be – but it’s a great place to sail down as a tourist. There are daily boat trips that will allow you to explore and appreciate the Corinthian Canal.

Ancient Corinth

Just outside the modern city, you will find an archaeological park that reveals the scale and majesty of ancient Corinth. It’s a good idea to hire a tour guide who can explain and interpret the ruins you’re seeing, but if you’d prefer to experience them alone then the site is certainly full of beauty and mystery.

Athens is a wonderful city to visit, but all the hustle and bustle can feel a bit overwhelming at times. This is why Aegina is the ideal island location to plan your itinerary. It’s situated just an hour’s ferry journey from Athens but offers as much peace, tranquility, and natural beauty as you could hope for. If you’re planning a trip to Athens soon, check out these three key reasons to include a visit to Aegina, as well.

Authentic Food

While it’s definitely possible to eat some delicious and authentic dishes in Athens, something about island living makes the food on Aegina taste even better! You can expect Greek classics such as dolmades, gyros and flatbreads, as well as plenty of deliciously fresh seafood that is caught in the island’s waters.

Seaside Sanctuary

While Athens is not too far away from the coast, it’s not exactly a beachside resort. If all the sightseeing and history in Athens has tired you out, Aegina is the perfect place to relax and unwind. There are large sandy beaches as well as more secluded coves, and if you want to get really close to the sea, an evening boat trip is highly recommended.

History Galore

Just in case all of the temples and monuments in Athens weren’t enough for you, Aegina boasts plenty of its own glorious ancient ruins. There are temple ruins of the gods Zeus and Apollo, as well as an ancient sacred olive grove that is peaceful and beautiful.
