Flying first class might be one of your bucket-list items, and it’s true, the experience will give a new flavor to your travels. But flying first class is also not always worth the price tag. So, should you? Shouldn’t you? Here are a few cases when it’s worth the splurge.

Long-Haul Flights

One of the most compelling reasons to consider flying first class is when you have a really long flight. The longer the flight, the more valuable the extra space and amenities become. On long journeys, the ability to stretch out, enjoy a comfortable bed or lie-flat seat, and access premium dining and entertainment can significantly enhance your overall travel experience.

Special Occasions

If you’re celebrating a special occasion like a honeymoon, milestone birthday, or anniversary, flying first class can be a great way to start your trip with a touch of luxury. The extra perks and pampering can make your celebration even more memorable.

Points and Miles

If you’ve accumulated a substantial number of frequent flyer miles or credit card points, you may be able to upgrade to first class without the crazy cost. This can make the upgrade a no-brainer since you’re essentially only using your loyalty rewards to enjoy the luxury of first class.

As if air travel weren’t inherently stressful enough, having to squeeze into crowded rows with minimal legroom can make flying even more uncomfortable. To avoid putting up with such minimal space, some passengers will opt to buy seats in first class, but what exactly do these tickets include aside from a bit more room to move around?

While the specifics do vary a bit by airline, there are a few benefits common to most first-class tickets that can completely transform the travel experience. If you’ve ever wondered about what actually distinguishes first class from economy and whether first-class tickets are worth the splurge, read on to learn more about some things that set the two apart.

Space

First-class cabins typically provide passengers with spacious seats that can recline more fully than their economy counterparts. The extra legroom allows for greater comfort, especially on long-haul journeys. In contrast, economy class seats are designed for efficiency, providing adequate space for shorter trips but often with less legroom and limited recline options.

Service and Amenities

From dedicated check-in counters to priority boarding, first-class passengers tend to be offered a higher level of personalized service before they even get on the plane. Onboard, they may receive more meal options and a wider selection of complimentary beverages. Some airlines will also provide first-class passengers with additional amenities such as cozy blankets and noise-canceling headphones. Economy class passengers receive standard services and complimentary meals or snacks, depending on the airline and flight duration.

Entertainment

Some first-class cabins will feature larger personal screens with a broader range of entertainment options than those available in economy. Additionally, some airlines now offer Wi-Fi connectivity to first-class passengers free of charge. While economy class passengers also have access to in-flight entertainment, the options may be more limited, and Wi-Fi is usually available at an additional cost.

Imagine a world where everyone flies business class. This is exactly what French boutique airline La Compagnie has done. Through its ingenuity and proactive approach, La Compagnie has become an entirely unique airline that is different from any other.

Intimate Cabin

While many airlines fly enormous planes such as the Boeing 777 or Airbus A380, La Compagnie is focused on quality, not quantity. This airline’s planes are all single-aisle, making for a more intimate flight and providing additional space for its luxurious business-class seating.

Limited Access

Founded in 2014, this French airline has a limited variety of flights available. With only two Airbus A321neos in its fleet, this Parisian carrier also flies to Nice, Milan, and Newark in the United States.

Lounge Experience

Although it does not have its own airport lounge, La Compagnie has contracts with third-party operators, allowing you to access a range of airport lounges as you wait to board your flight.

If you’re someone who’s never traveled in First Class (AKA you’re someone who’s just like the rest of us normies), you may have longed for the feeling of what it’s like to sit in that coveted cabin. You may have even taken a sneak peek at the First Class ticket prices occasionally, only to be shocked at how much more expensive they are than regular coach. But why are they so much more expensive? It’s a given that the experience is greater, but sometimes the prices are a few thousand dollars extra—so why is it so lopsided?

A Buyer’s Market

The answer is really quite simple. The reason First Class is so incredibly expensive actually doesn’t have to do so much with the accommodations of First Class itself. Rather, it has to do with the people sitting in First Class. The only reason an airline is able to charge upwards of $3,000 or $4,000 a ticket is for the simple fact that there are people out there willing to spend it.

Thanks to data spreadsheets and advanced analytics, airlines know the exact amount that they can charge for a ticket to optimize profit. If they set the ticket price too low, they’d be losing out on free money. If they set the ticket price too high, they may lose out on customers. So the truth is that First Class ticket prices as they are today are solely based on what the market is willing to pay—and First Class customers have demonstrated that their pockets are that much deeper than the rest!

There’s an old saying that you get what you pay for in life, and therefore it would seem pretty obvious why first-class tickets are as expensive as they are. Big, comfy, and spacious seats, flight attendants treating you a bit nicer (let’s be real), better food, and just an overall better experience—should equal a higher price ticket, right? Well… this article isn’t exactly here to dissect why these seats are more pricey. We’re here to explain why they’re ridiculously more pricey.

People Can Afford It

It’s really that simple. You might think to yourself that you’d be willing to spend a few hundred dollars more for a first-class ticket, but there are much richer people out there who’d be happy to spend a few thousand dollars more for that same first-class seat, and it wouldn’t even cause a dent into their bank account.

The fact of the matter is, many people who commonly fly first class aren’t exactly paying with money they don’t have. They aren’t scraping the bottom of the barrel. These are people with serious chunk change to spare, and the airlines know it. So next time you’re wondering why a first-class ticket is at least $2,000 more than an economy seat, this is the reason why. You have your one percenters to thank!

Have you always wanted to get upgraded to first class? While many of us dream of one day sitting in first class, only a select few people actually get upgraded. And contrary to popular belief, the secret to getting an upgrade doesn’t have to do with timing or knowing the right people. It’s all about wearing the right clothes. So, what should you wear?

While it’s nice to be comfortable while traveling, don’t expect to arrive in sweatpants and sneakers and get an upgrade. If you want to fly first class, you’ll have to dress the part and put a bit more effort into what you wear.

You should be “smart but understated. You should look like you travel often…it helps; someone who is potentially due to get an upgrade can be knocked back if they aren’t dressed suitably,” a flight attendant said to Who What Wear, adding that wearing the latest trends and hottest designers isn’t necessary.

When you get dressed, wear something you would for a casual workday and avoid dirty sneakers, flip-flops, old shirts, and jeans. You don’t need to be too formal, but you shouldn’t look like you’re headed to the gym.

Who knew getting upgraded was down to the clothes you wear to the airport? Are you ready to fly first class?
