The Great Barrier Reef is one of the worldā€™s most spectacular natural phenomena. The largest underwater coral reef in the world is located in the Coral Sea, a shallow section of the southwestern Pacific Ocean off of the coast of Queensland, Australia. While we all know what a reef is like, more or less, the Great Barrier Reef also holds all kinds of surprises. Here are three that will astound you!

Heart Reef

One of the most curious things youā€™ll find in the Great Barrier Reef is a ā€œheart reef,ā€ a heart-shaped reef formation located in the Whitsunday area. A helicopter or airplane tour is the best way to see this strange phenomenon in all of its glory.

Dwarf Minke Whales

While a huge variety of flora and fauna inhabit the Great Barrier Reefā€™s ecosystem, one of the most fascinating ones are its dwarf minke whales. These small baleen whalesā€”which are only about 5 meters long on averageā€”can often be observed ambling about while snorkeling or scuba diving here.

A Shipwreck

The SS Yongala was a ship that capsized during a cyclone in 1911 and settled in the depths of the Great Barrier Reef. Now accessible on dive tours, youā€™ll be amazed at how the animals and plants of the reef have completely taken over this mechanical structure and turned it into a natural paradise.

Snorkeling is one of the best things that you can do while on vacation in the beach. Especially in tropical waters, there are tons of different things that you can see in just a short time underwater.

If you love snorkeling or if youā€™re looking to get into it, here are some places that you should go to explore the underwater ecosystem!

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

The massive Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia is undoubtedly one of the best places on Earth to snorkel. Here, you can see clownfish and the amazing variety of colorful corals that the reef offers.

Los Cabos, Mexico

Los Cabos is on the tip of Baja California and is a great place to snorkel in warm water. Jacques Costeau once called the waters near Baja California ā€œThe Worldā€™s Aquariumā€ and youā€™ll see why when you see the huge variety of marine life here.

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

The Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador might be remote, but their snorkeling is unbelievable. Reef sharks, sea turtles, and Galapagos penguins are some of the many kinds of animals that youā€™ll see in the waters here.

The Big Island, Hawaii, USA

The entire Hawaiian archipelago is a great place to snorkel, but the Big Island of Hawaii is definitely the best. Colorful coral species and tropical fish will jump out to you immediately in these warm, pleasant Pacific waters.

Australia is maybe really far away and you have a long road ahead of you if you wanna visit, but this magnificent country can offer you things that you literally canā€™t see anywhere else! Here is why you should visit Australia at least once in your life.

Great Barrier Reef

The worldā€™s largest living organism, which is home to 1,500 different species of mammals, fish, reptiles and birdsĀ as well asĀ one of the seven natural wonders,Ā stretchesĀ over 344,400 square kilometers.Ā ThisĀ makes itĀ one of the most intriguing ecosystems in the world.Ā You can see it up close and enjoy the magnificent colors of the corals.Ā Ā

Aboriginal Culture

Itā€™s one of the oldest cultures in the world that still exists. The spiritual connectionsĀ areĀ very important for theĀ Aboriginals, not only theirĀ connection to the land, but alsoĀ to theirĀ dreams. There are lot of tours that allow you to get know theĀ indigenousĀ culture a little better.Ā

The Museum of Underwater Art is coming to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef marine park.

Created by the sculptor and environmentalist Jason deCaires Taylor, the museum is certainly unique. It will feature installations and sculptures submerged in the water. Taylor is using art to raise awareness of the threat the ecosystem faces.

ā€œThe Australian Institute of Marine Science has a series of temperature loggers around the reef. It will compile this data and feed it into the sculpture, so that changes in temperature will be seen in real time,ā€ the artist said.

He also explained: ā€œOur oceans are going through rapid change, and there are huge threats, from rising sea temperatures to acidification, and a large amount of pollution entering the system.

ā€œPart of creating an underwater museum is about changing our value systems ā€“ thinking about the sea floor as something sacred, something that we should be protecting and not taking for granted.ā€

https://www.instagram.com/p/BhOs-PbAfTO/

One exhibit includes a solar-powered sculpture of a young girl who changes color based on the live water-temperature data. Others will be partially or fully submerged underwater.

The exhibits will be spread out across Queensland’s coat and will open in December 2019.
