]]>The last time that lava spewed from the 4,169-mile-high volcano was in 1984. For context, that was the year that Ronald Reagan was elected as President of the United States and Steve Jobs launched the first Mac computer.
Named Mauna Loa, which is Hawaiian for “long mountain”, it is the largest active volcano in the world and is located inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. At around 11:30 PM on November 27, an eruption began at the volcano’s summit in Moku‘āweoweo after more than a dozen minor earthquakes occurred. Just a month before, the National Park Service had closed the volcano summit to visitors “due to elevated seismic activity on Mauna Loa and as a precautionary measure.”
Thousands have now flocked to see glimpses of the lava, but officials are warning that the molten matter could slide across the highway and make the road impassable. At present, the lava is around 2.7 miles from the road.
If Mauna Loa decides to follow historical patterns, the eruption is expected to continue for 1-2 weeks.

]]>There are very few places in the world where it’s possible to stargaze on top of a volcano, but Mauna Kea island is one of them. The volcano is dormant, but its height and distance from any major cities makes it an ideal spot to see stars with crystal clarity.
The location of Glacier National Park makes it an amazing spot for stargazing for several reasons—it’s far from sources of light pollution, and its climate is typically quite dry. As a result, the skies are usually free from clouds and offer perfect visibility, especially during the summer.
Pennsylvania’s probably not the first place that comes to mind when thinking of the best places to stargaze, but don’t let the location stop you from visiting Cherry Springs State Park when you have the chance. It’s got one of the darkest skies in the country, offering visibility clear enough that on some nights, you can even see the Milky Way.

Tiles from Iran, wood carvings from Morocco, embroidery from Central Asia—her collection includes more than 3,500 pieces, many of which are housed in the building itself. Tours in Shangri La are operated by the Honolulu Museum of Art.
This trail is actually an old railroad from World War II. Parts of it are in disrepair so hikers should be cautious, but the breathtaking view of Hanauma Bay at the top is totally worth it.
The Corsair Airplane Wreck of O’hau is located about three miles from the Hawaii Kai marina. Luckily, the seasoned pilot managed to make a smooth water landing, and survive the crash, but the WWII aircraft stayed in the bottom of the ocean and attracted many divers and photographers over the years. The dive site is considered advances, so you will need a guide to accompany you.

]]>It can often be difficult to decide which island is right for you when planning your excursion to Hawaii, so let this guide help you settle on the best island for you.
Kauai, whose nickname is “The Garden Isle,” is the perfect island to choose if you are looking to get lost in nature and avoid the crowds. Located in the western third of the archipelago, you will find mountains, rainforests, and virgin beaches here without the overwhelming crowds that you can often find on other islands.
Oahu is the most populated island and Hawaii and the one with the biggest tourism scene and with good reason. The biggest city (Honolulu) and the largest international airport are located here, making it a hub for travelers and offering up bars, nightlife, and shopping. Surfers will also love the big waves that can be caught on the island’s north shore.
The second-largest Hawaiian island is Maui, and it is a great “halfway” point for travelers who are looking for equal parts relaxation and attractions. Great for families thanks to its tourist infrastructure and nice beaches, adventurers will also appreciate Maui’s outdoor sports opportunities.

The most popular cuisine in Hawaii is known as Hawaiian BBQ, but it probably isn’t like any other barbecue that you are familiar with. On the islands, you will find restaurants that serve up dishes like fried spam, kalua pork, and macaroni salad which are the most popular Hawaiian foods.
If you are lucky enough to find one or to be invited to one, a Hawaiian party and feast known as a luau is just about as quintessential as it gets. Traditional dress, dancing, and singing are other integral parts of this experience which is best done as close to the beach as possible.

With a country as beautiful as Switzerland, it’s not surprising that Zurich is the cleanest city in Europe, for more than one reason. The city has rigorous waste management and composting rules and, when it comes to transport, people regularly use bikes, buses, and trains instead of cars.
Calgary in Canada is another city that handles waste very well. One campaign, named “Too good to be a waste,” has significantly reduced the amount of litter that ends up in fields and landfills. Sorting and recycling various materials have dramatically reduced pollution in Calgary.
