History is currently being made in Hawaii. For the first time in almost 4 decades, the island’s Mauna Loa volcano has erupted.

The last time that lava spewed from the 4,169-mile-high volcano was in 1984. For context, that was the year that Ronald Reagan was elected as President of the United States and Steve Jobs launched the first Mac computer.

Named Mauna Loa, which is Hawaiian for “long mountain”, it is the largest active volcano in the world and is located inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. At around 11:30 PM on November 27, an eruption began at the volcano’s summit in Moku‘āweoweo after more than a dozen minor earthquakes occurred. Just a month before, the National Park Service had closed the volcano summit to visitors “due to elevated seismic activity on Mauna Loa and as a precautionary measure.”

Thousands have now flocked to see glimpses of the lava, but officials are warning that the molten matter could slide across the highway and make the road impassable. At present, the lava is around 2.7 miles from the road.

If Mauna Loa decides to follow historical patterns, the eruption is expected to continue for 1-2 weeks.

Living in a city has its benefits—the access to plenty of events and landmarks, convenience of stores being open 24/7, and excitement of a fast-paced lifestyle are certainly not to be taken for granted. With that said, city life can make it difficult to connect with nature in any kind of meaningful way, which comes with plenty of benefits of its own. Light pollution specifically can obscure the stars and make them almost impossible to see, so we love making a point of getting some stargazing in whenever we’re in a more natural setting. Here are some of our favorite stargazing spots:

Mauna Kea, Hawaii

There are very few places in the world where it’s possible to stargaze on top of a volcano, but Mauna Kea island is one of them. The volcano is dormant, but its height and distance from any major cities makes it an ideal spot to see stars with crystal clarity.

Glacier National Park, Montana

The location of Glacier National Park makes it an amazing spot for stargazing for several reasons—it’s far from sources of light pollution, and its climate is typically quite dry. As a result, the skies are usually free from clouds and offer perfect visibility, especially during the summer.

Cherry Springs State Park, Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania’s probably not the first place that comes to mind when thinking of the best places to stargaze, but don’t let the location stop you from visiting Cherry Springs State Park when you have the chance. It’s got one of the darkest skies in the country, offering visibility clear enough that on some nights, you can even see the Milky Way.

The one thing that sets O’ahu apart from other Hawaiian islands is Honululu—the only Hawaiian metropolis. While Hawaii is known for its breathtaking nature, Honolulu is worth exploring too. The city has much more to offer than its world-famous beaches. Here are three cool things to see in Honolulu.

Shangri La

Shangri La is the Hawaii home of philanthropist Doris Duke. It was built to her specifications in 1937, and until her death, Duke continued to collect Islamic art to decorate her mansion. Tiles from Iran, wood carvings from Morocco, embroidery from Central Asia—her collection includes more than 3,500 pieces, many of which are housed in the building itself. Tours in Shangri La are operated by the Honolulu Museum of Art.

Koko Crater Trail

This trail is actually an old railroad from World War II. Parts of it are in disrepair so hikers should be cautious, but the breathtaking view of Hanauma Bay at the top is totally worth it.

Corsair Plane Dive Site

The Corsair Airplane Wreck of O’hau is located about three miles from the Hawaii Kai marina. Luckily, the seasoned pilot managed to make a smooth water landing, and survive the crash, but the WWII aircraft stayed in the bottom of the ocean and attracted many divers and photographers over the years. The dive site is considered advances, so you will need a guide to accompany you.

There’s something about seeing rainbows that brings us right back to our childhoods. While they’re quite rare in most places, you’re more likely to see this natural beauty in some spots around the world. These three locations are the best when it comes to chasing these colorful arches. You’ll want to capture these views and post them on your social media.

Hawaii

It only makes sense that rainbows would be common year-round in “The Rainbow State”, which also features them on the state’s license plates. The best spots to see them are Kauai, Maui, and Oahu. The latter is home to the Manoa Valley, which is known as the “Valley of Rainbows”.

Australia

Australia is home to the Rainbow Coast on the southern shores of the western part of the country. The sun shines from the north onto rain that then reflects off the southern ocean at the Rainbow Coast. Due to the sun, you can see a rainbow throughout the day.

Ireland

In Irish culture, rainbows are considered a symbol of hope and good fortune, and because of the mix of sunshine and rain in the country, they happen a lot.

Who wouldn’t love to go on a trip to Hawaii? This archipelago in the Pacific Ocean is a tropical paradise whose seven main islands contain beaches, mountains, rainforests, and surfing in equal parts.

It can often be difficult to decide which island is right for you when planning your excursion to Hawaii, so let this guide help you settle on the best island for you.

Nature Lovers: Kauai

Kauai, whose nickname is “The Garden Isle,” is the perfect island to choose if you are looking to get lost in nature and avoid the crowds. Located in the western third of the archipelago, you will find mountains, rainforests, and virgin beaches here without the overwhelming crowds that you can often find on other islands.

Surfing and Shopping: Oahu

Oahu is the most populated island and Hawaii and the one with the biggest tourism scene and with good reason. The biggest city (Honolulu) and the largest international airport are located here, making it a hub for travelers and offering up bars, nightlife, and shopping. Surfers will also love the big waves that can be caught on the island’s north shore.

Adventurers and Families: Maui

The second-largest Hawaiian island is Maui, and it is a great “halfway” point for travelers who are looking for equal parts relaxation and attractions. Great for families thanks to its tourist infrastructure and nice beaches, adventurers will also appreciate Maui’s outdoor sports opportunities.

Hawaii is one of the gems of the Pacific Ocean, a collection of gorgeous islands that feature beaches and tropical weather and scenery. While many people who go to Hawaii do so simply to sit at a resort, sip cocktails, and relax, anyone who wants to get an authentic taste of the archipelago has plenty of opportunities to participate in authentically Hawaiian traditions. These are some that you might find worth checking out!

Surfing

Surfing is hugely popular in Hawaii thanks to the island chain’s privileged position in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Head to the island of Oahu for Hawaii’s best surfing beaches, but you can find plenty of places appropriate for both beginners and experts on any of the islands.

Hawaiian BBQ

The most popular cuisine in Hawaii is known as Hawaiian BBQ, but it probably isn’t like any other barbecue that you are familiar with. On the islands, you will find restaurants that serve up dishes like fried spam, kalua pork, and macaroni salad which are the most popular Hawaiian foods.

Luau

If you are lucky enough to find one or to be invited to one, a Hawaiian party and feast known as a luau is just about as quintessential as it gets. Traditional dress, dancing, and singing are other integral parts of this experience which is best done as close to the beach as possible.

For some people, coffee is something they cannot live without. That’s why certain coffee-producing countries like Ethiopia, Vietnam, and Brazil attract coffee connoisseurs every year. However, the tropical state of Hawaii has a growing coffee scene that coffee lovers should be eager to sample. Here are a couple of plantations that offer daily tours, and samples of their beans.

Kauai Coffee

On the garden island known as Kauai, Kauai Coffee has quickly become one of the top attractions for visitors to the island. You can take a tour of the plantation via an open-air bus for $25 and learn about the lifecycle of coffee beans, from tree to cup. There is also a complimentary walking tour, with free coffee samples served inside of the main office.

Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation

If you head over to the Big Island, you can sample some of the Kona grown coffees from Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation. Due to the fact that the island has two active volcanoes, the area in which these coffee beans are grown is one of the lushest in the world. That rich soil can be tasted in every cup. There are free tours every hour, and for an additional cost, you can take a tour of the coffee fields and the nearby lava tubes.

If you are not a big fan of hiking, but you care about the quality of the air you breathe, you should consider visiting these places, since they are literally a breath of fresh air!

Honolulu, Hawaii

Due to the winds that carry all harmful particles into the sea, the air in Honolulu, Hawaii, is considered to be the cleanest in the world. Perhaps this cleanliness of the air is the reason why Honolulu has the least number of strokes and heart attack cases per capita.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B7MdfncDkE9/

Zurich, Switzerland

With a country as beautiful as Switzerland, it’s not surprising that Zurich is the cleanest city in Europe, for more than one reason. The city has rigorous waste management and composting rules and, when it comes to transport, people regularly use bikes, buses, and trains instead of cars.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B7L7LaAhvsb/

Calgary, Canada

Calgary in Canada is another city that handles waste very well. One campaign, named “Too good to be a waste,” has significantly reduced the amount of litter that ends up in fields and landfills. Sorting and recycling various materials have dramatically reduced pollution in Calgary.

Living in a city has its benefits—the access to plenty of events and landmarks, convenience of stores being open 24/7, and excitement of a fast-paced lifestyle are certainly not to be taken for granted.

Calgary, Canada

Calgary in Canada is another city that handles waste very well. One campaign, named “Too good to be a waste,” has significantly reduced the amount of litter that ends up in fields and landfills. Sorting and recycling various materials have dramatically reduced pollution in Calgary.
