The northern lights are a mesmerizing phenomenon that millions of people from around the globe travel to witness every year, typically in Nordic countries such as Finland and Iceland. True to their name, the lights are easiest to spot in more northern locations, but once in a while, the stars align and aurora borealis makes an appearance as far south as the United States. Here are a few locations where you’re most likely to catch them.

Upper Peninsula, Michigan

Along the Great Lakes, the expansive skies of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula make it one of the best places to see the northern lights in the entire US. Although the Upper Peninsula covers almost one-third of the state, it only contains about 3% of the total population, meaning the region has next to no light pollution to obscure celestial activity. The further north you go, the more frequently the lights appear, though October through April is considered peak season.

Aroostook County, Maine

Moving east, Maine’s northernmost county also happens to be one of its least densely populated, providing the necessary clear conditions for successful stargazing. During winter, pitch-black skies over all 3.5 million acres of Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge provide a perfect blank canvas for the ethereal colors of aurora borealis.

Glacier National Park, Montana

Where else to observe the beauty of aurora borealis than Big Sky Country? Montana’s geographical position and dark winter skies allow the northern lights to make occasional appearances in the northern regions of the state. Glacier National Park, in particular, offers clear views of the lights as they dance over the mountains.

Many of us have enjoyed camping as an annual tradition alongside friends and family ever since we were children. Nights spent around the campfire telling scary stories, with plenty of s’mores, of course, will forever remain etched in our hearts as some of the best in our lives, and we look forward to creating more memories in the years to come. If the joy of it all weren’t enough of an incentive, we’ve also discovered that there are several mental and physical benefits to camping that have us even more excited to plan our next trip to the great outdoors. Read on to learn more about why camping has become our new favorite form of travel.

Stress Reduction

If only for a moment, camping offers us the opportunity to spend time with loved ones, disconnect from the digital world, replacing cell phones and Wi-Fi for fun and fresh air. The absence of everyday pressures combined with the tranquility of nature can help to clear the mind and calm the nervous system. Camping has even been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Physical Fitness

From setting up camp to hiking local trails, camping is inherently physical, especially if you plan to include swimming or other outdoor sports in your itinerary. Though they may not feel like a workout in the traditional sense, these activities provide the same benefits to cardiovascular health and muscle strength as a run on the treadmill or session at the gym—no membership required.

Enhanced Sleep Quality

Light pollution in urban environments and constant exposure to screens can disrupt the body’s natural circadian rhythm, making it difficult to fall asleep and decreasing sleep quality throughout the night. While not a permanent solution, a few nights away from artificial light can help to regulate the body’s internal clock so quality sleep comes naturally. Once you’ve returned home, it’s just a matter of maintaining this new rhythm.

Traveling invokes a certain wanderlust spirit and appetite that must be unleashed. Whether you are a fan of nature, art, or history, we’ve got you covered with a short list with some of the most underrated places to visit on your next trip around the world.

Chefchaouen, Morocco

Also known as “The Blue Pearl of Morocco,” this gem hidden up North in Morocco is famous for its narrow streets, art, and mountainous views. The entire city is painted blue, and is a peaceful respite from the rest of the bustling cities in Morocco. Be sure to stay in some of the city’s most beautiful architectural homes, knows as Riad’s, as you sip on mint tea and overlook the Riff Mountains.

Bhutan

Nestled deep in the Himalayan’s, Bhutan is a tranquil, Buddhist kingdom, often overlooked by its neighboring countries in South East Asia. Bhutan is a wonderful escape for travelers looking for nature with mountain views, ancient monasteries, and interesting history. Often dubbed as the “Switzerland of Asia,” Bhutan only opened for tourism in the 1970s making a truly hidden gem and a must visit.

Surigao del Sur, Philippines

If you’re a fan of nature, islands, and water you should definitely add the Philippines to your bucket list. Nestled behind the rocky mountains is Surigao del Sir, a small province with a river that looks straight out of a fairytale. The river and the nature of this province is a respite from the crowds in the more touristy areas.

Camping is an incredibly fun activity for the whole family, or for a big group of friends. However, before you embark on a trip to the great outdoors, make sure you stay safe with the following tips.

Choosing Your Campsite

Before you even head outdoors, do some research on your potential campsites to check for any abnormal weather alerts or wildlife activity happening in the area. Read up on the terrain conditions, opting for established campsites with designated fire pits when possible. Within your chosen campsite, set up your things away from low-lying areas that may be prone to flash flooding, keeping safe distance from any cliffs or steep slopes.

Fire Safety

Campfires are a central part of camping, but they’re also the most dangerous if not managed properly. Research any regulations or restrictions at your campsite in advance, and once you’ve arrived, thoroughly clear the area around the fire pit of any flammable debris. Have a few gallons of water nearby just in case, and never leave a fire unattended. Make sure the fire and any embers are extinguished before you to go sleep or leave the campsite.

Wildlife Awareness

Encountering animals up close can be exciting, but it’s important to remember that even the cutest critters are still wild animals. To avoid attracting any unwanted visitors, keep food stored securely in bear-resistant containers or hung from a tree. Learn about the local wildlife and their habits, and resist the temptation to get too close if you come across them. For extra protection, consider carrying bear spray or a homemade vinegar-based repellent.

If you’re a nature lover with plans to visit Japan in the near future, read on to learn more about some exceptional nature-related activities to add to your itinerary.

Gardens

Japan’s meticulously crafted gardens are a testament to the nation’s deep appreciation for nature’s tranquility. One of the most famous gardens is Kenrokuen in Kanazawa, a strolling garden filled with streams, bridges, and meticulously pruned trees. Tokyo’s Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is another gem, where visitors can enjoy the serene ambiance of cherry blossoms during spring or vibrant foliage in autumn.

Forests

For a magical experience in what can only be described as an enchanted forest, head to Miyajima Island near Hiroshima. The island is lush with ancient trees, and deer and other wildlife run free. Additionally, the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in Kyoto and the moss-covered primeval rainforests of Yakushima Island in southwest Japan are also worth a visit.

Mountains

Japan is home to some of the world’s most awe-inspiring peaks, including the iconic 3,776-meter summit of Mount Fuji. Hikers of all levels should also be sure to check out the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, a network of paths in the Kii Peninsula of varied lengths and difficulty. Are you dying for a bit of nature after being surrounded by buildings and traffic all day, every day? Did you know the concrete jungle also has some pretty awesome hikes? Well, okay, they’re not exactly in the city, but they are pretty close! You can easily take a train or drive to these locations from NYC.

Breakneck Ridge

This is one of the most popular hikes in the New York City area, and it’s totally understandable why! If you love a challenging (and adrenaline-inducing) hike, this one is great. A steep climb is totally worth the picturesque views from the top!

Bear Mountain

The Bear Mountain Loop Trail is another favorite in the area, although this one is considered more moderately challenging. You can even bring your dog, as long as it stays on a leash.

Old Croton Aqueduct Trail

The Old Croton Aqueduct Trail is much more of a stroll than a hike, but it doesn’t make it any less beautiful! You can jog, walk, push a stroller, or bike along this trail that leads to a beautiful historical landmark.

Pine Meadow Lake

Located in Harriman State Park, the Pine Meadow Lake trail is a great way to experience upstate New York without going too far out of the city! It has great views of the water and a moderately challenging path to keep you entertained.

Is there anything in nature more beautiful than waterfalls? The sound of rushing water, the gentle mist, and the feeling of being surrounded by clean, fresh air all come together to create an experience that feels almost otherworldly. Fortunately, you don’t have to travel to another world to enjoy their benefits. The United States is full of amazing waterfalls just waiting to be explored.  Here are a few lesser-known ones we especially love.

Ruby Falls, Tennessee

Ruby Falls is located deep inside Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee. At 145 feet, it’s the tallest underground waterfall open to the public in the entire US. The falls are illuminated with LED lights that make the water appear to glow in different colors. Walking to the falls is a bit of an adventure and involves navigating several narrow passageways, but the reward at the end is well worth it.

Arethusa Falls, New Hampshire

This waterfall is tucked away in the White Mountains and is one of the tallest waterfalls in New Hampshire. The hike to the falls is only about 1.5 miles long, and, although a bit rocky in parts, is easy enough for families with children. We recommend visiting in late spring or early summer when the stream is usually strongest.

Burney Falls, California

Theodore Roosevelt once referred to Burney Falls in Northern California as the “Eighth Wonder of the World” in reaction to its spectacular beauty. The 129-foot waterfall is fed by underground springs and is surrounded by lush greenery, making it a popular spot for hikers and nature lovers alike.

With its harmonious blend of traditional culture and breathtaking natural landscapes, Japan is a paradise for travelers of all types. For nature enthusiasts, in particular, the country offers a plethora of experiences that can provide an oasis from the hustle and bustle of city life.

UNESCO recognizes the Kumano region as a World Heritage Site.
