Sometimes you just need travel advice from a local. If you’re planning a trip to Puerto Rico, allow Bad Bunny to be your guide for the best places to visit. The “Ojitos Lindos” singer was born and bred on the island, so you can bet he knows all the hottest spots!

Where to Shop

As one of the most famous artists in the world, Bad Bunny has also adopted the role of a style icon. If you’re keen to follow in his fashionable ways, you’ve got to head to Calle Loíza in San Juan. Pop into Back Door Vintage, Vice Versa, and Electroshock to browse for some threads.

What to Eat

Spanish, African, and Caribbean flavors play a huge part in Puerto Rican cuisine. Be sure to visit some little restaurants along the coast where the seafood is fresh. Octopus ceviche is a recommended dish, as is mofongo which is mashed plantain that has been shaped into a ball and filled with some form of protein.

Where to Party

Puerto Ricans love to dance, so expect to find good music and even better vibes in most bars that you find. Check out La Cueva del Mar in San Juan, La Placita in Santurce, or Aljibe and Calle Bosque in MayagĂźez. The party tends to move to the beach where people jive till the sun rises.

The island of Puerto Rico is the perfect destination for almost any type of traveler from the US who isn’t looking to venture too far. The island has a little something for everyone, from beach bums to nature lovers to enthusiastic history buffs. Its climate and culture have contributed to rapid growth in Puerto Rican tourism over the last few years, and the industry is showing no signs of slowing down. Hotels are popping up all over the island, allowing more tourists to come and enjoy all that Puerto Rico has to offer. Whatever you’re looking for in a vacation, PR has a hotel that’s right for you—here are some of our favorite places to stay.

Hotel El Convento

History lovers and city dwellers alike are sure to enjoy a stay at the Hotel El Convento in Old San Juan. The hotel opened as a convent over 350 years ago and has since served as everything from a dance hall to a flophouse before it was turned into a hotel in 1962.

Royal Sonesta San Juan

Don’t let the name fool you – this hotel is actually located on the beach in Carolina, Puerto Rico, about a half hour from the city of San Juan. It overlooks the Isla Verde (meaning “Green Island”) beach and is an amazing place for those looking for some serious R&R.

Rainforest Inn

Get away from it all (really, this place is seriously secluded) at the Rainforest Inn in the middle of the El Yunque National Forest. This bed and breakfast-style inn is an ideal place for those who enjoy hiking and swimming or want to feel at one with nature.

As important as it is to try to keep a regular sleep routine, when traveling, sometimes it’s challenging to be too strict. Whether you’ve crossed several time zones and are experiencing serious jet lag or are just too excited about being in a new location, you don’t have to worry about not being able to sleep. In fact, there are some places that you’ll actually enjoy more because of it. While the bulk of tourist attractions are at their most popular during the day, there are a special few that can only be enjoyed in the dark. Here are a few of our favorites.

The Northern Lights

Aurora borealis can be enjoyed from many locations including Canada, Alaska, and the northern parts of the Nordic countries in Europe. One of our favorite spots is Tromsø in Norway, which is also known for its wildlife and is a great location for whale watching.

Mosquito Bay, Puerto Rico

As if Caribbean beaches weren’t already beautiful enough, this beach in Puerto Rico actually glows in the dark. Mosquito Bay, also known as Bio-luminescent Bay, is home to a species of phytoplankton that emit a neon blue glow as they move. The glow is only visible at night.

Atacama Desert

This desert plateau in Chile, South America, is consistently rated one of the best locations for stargazing in the world. The altitude and lack of light pollution make for a crystal-clear view of not only stars, but the entire Milky Way.

Puerto Rico is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. One of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean (which is saying a lot), tourists flock to this location during the summer months and pretty much set up camp near its serene shores. If you see yourself potentially visiting Puerto Rico one day, these are the beaches to keep an eye on.

Sun Bay Beach

The gorgeous shore of Sun Bay Beach is located on Isla Vieques, a Spanish Virgin Island that goes on for 21 miles. Sun Bay is one of the most popular beaches in this area, mainly due to one particular highlight: at times during the night, a certain patch of the ocean water will glow brightly due to the natural movement of phosphorescent dinoflagellates beneath the surface.

Playa Flamenco

If you’re looking for paradise, Playa Flamenco is where you need to be. The sand on this beach is as white as snow, and the calm waters offer a truly relaxing experience. It’s also located on the popular Culebra Island, which is a super fun place to explore in its own right.

Luquillo Beach

Arguably one of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico, Luquillo Beach is rife with coconut palm trees and a brilliant turquoise ocean that’s enough to make any traveler happy. It’s a hotspot for joggers, tanners, and partyers alike.

If you don’t have a valid passport, travel options can be fairly limiting, but did you know there are places outside of the U.S. American citizens can travel to that don’t require a passport? That’s right! There are tropical destinations that have warm weather and sandy, turquoise beaches that you don’t even need a passport to visit. Here are three overseas destinations to check out.

United States Virgin Islands

Made up of three main islands—St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John, and some smaller isles, the U.S. Virgin Islands has something for everyone. Each of the main islands has a unique culture with St. John known for diving and national parkland, St. Croix for its lavish honeymoon locations, and St. Thomas for its cruise terminals and shopping.

Puerto Rico

For east coasters, Puerto Rico is super accessible and the airfare is really cheap. The landscape has a fantastic mix of mountains, beaches, waterfalls, and rainforests.

Guam

Beyond having World War II history and being a U.S. military, navy, coast guard, and air force site, Guam has some of the most beautiful beaches and seas which make for great snorkeling and diving spots. For the most incredible views, don’t miss Two Lovers Point, a cliff-side lookout.

Puerto Rican cuisine is bold and delicious as the European and African influences make it diverse. Here are four delicious Puerto Rican dishes to introduce you to the island’s cuisine—we’re sure you’ll want to try more soon!

Mofongo

Plantains, also known as cooking bananas, are mixed with oil, garlic, and spices, then mashed and fried to make mofongo. The dish is often served with shrimp and chicharrĂłnes. Mofongo represents a blend of different cultures and traditions with West African, Taino, and Spanish influences.

Tres Leches

If you’re up for a Puerto Rican dessert try tres leches, which combines regular yellow sponge cake and three types of milk. You may have tried tres leches before as its a part of many different cultures, Puerto Rican being one of them.

Harina de MaĂz

Harina de maĂz is a traditional Puerto Rican breakfast that’s many children’s favorite. It’s similar to oatmeal, but it’s made with cornmeal, sugar, milk, and vanilla. The flavor is universally loved, even by picky eaters, which is why it’s often offered to kids.

Pinchos

If you don’t know what to eat while exploring the island, try pinchos at one of many street vendor carts. Pinchos are basically shish kebabs made with pork, chicken, or shrimp. They’re perfect for meat lovers!

Puerto Rico has a very diverse and rich cuisine because of the influences of African, Taino and Spanish cuisines. As a mix of all three, it’s delicious and unique and will definitely make you drool.

Arroz con dulce

It’s a very easy and light dessert that you can even make at home! You soak some rice with coconut cream or milk for a few hours and then you boil it twice and add spices. Before the rise absorbs all the water, you add raisins and let it cool. At the end, you top it with cinnamon. It’s a great refreshment in warm days.

Tostones

Plantains are commonly used in Puerto Rico, and for this dish they’re cut and then fried; the slices are flattened by tostonera and fried again. You can use a variety of sauces although a combination of ketchup and mayonnaise called mayoketchup is the most common.

Mamposteao

Mamposteao is an easy dish that anyone can make – the main ingredients are green peppers, beans, tomato sauce, cilantro, olive oil and onions. All the ingredients are mixed and then cooked in just one pan. You can find this popular dish in almost any restaurant and even food trucks!
