Baseball

Surprisingly, baseball is undoubtedly Japan’s most popular sport. It is often described as the country’s “National Sport”. The ball, the strike zone, and the field are a little smaller than in American baseball. But some American players do actually play in the Japanese leagues.

Sumo Wrestling

The most famous traditional Japanese sport, Sumo wrestling has been around since ancient times. It is the most prestigious and highly respected sport in Japan.

Tennis

Tennis has been played in Japan for about 150 years. The sport has taken a prominent cultural place. In fact, Japan’s first-ever gold Olympic medals were in tennis.

Boxing

Golf

Another western import, golf has been traditionally played by the Japanese middle classes. The sport has since opened up to people of all classes and genders.

Are you a fan of basketball? If so, you might want to add the state of Indiana in the midwestern United States to your list of places to visit. James Naismith, the founder of basketball, once said, “basketball really had its origin in Indiana, which remains the center of the sport”, proving just how important it is in the Hoosier State. If you head to Indiana to check out its basketball scene, don’t miss seeing a game in these three spots.

Bankers Life Fieldhouse

The Indianapolis home of the NBA’s Indiana Pacers, this arena which seats nearly 18,000 fans is one of the most intense places to see a game in professional basketball. Loud and passionate fans decked in blue and yellow have cheered on legends like Reggie Miller and Rik Smits throughout the years.

Hinkle Fieldhouse

College basketball is also a huge deal in Indiana, and Hinkle Fieldhouse is another Indianapolis spot that can’t be missed. The former home of the world-famous Indiana High School Basketball Tournament and the current home of the Butler Bulldogs, this century-old arena is equal parts old school and cool.

Assembly Hall

Arguably the most passionately-supported team in all of Indiana is the Indiana University Hoosiers, who have won 5 National Championships in the men’s college ranks. Over 17,000 fans pack into Assembly Hall for most games to cheer on their team in Bloomington.

Spain is the home of some of the most famous clubs in the world of soccer, as well as some of its most loyal and passionate fans. While clubs like FC Barcelona and Real Madrid might be the most famous ones, there is a wealth of passion and soccer culture to be discovered beyond those two giants.

Have you ever thought about planning a soccer-centric trip to Spain? If so, don’t pass up the chance to visit these three stadiums and catch a game to feel the country’s passion for the game.

San Mames (Athletic Club)

Athletic Club’s San Mames Stadium is the home of Bilbao’s Athletic Club and is often known as “The Temple” due to its sleekness and elegance. Here, over 50,000 rabid Athletic supporters gather to cheer on their team, one of Spain’s best and most historic clubs.

Benito Villamarin (Real Betis)

Real Betis is one of the two main teams in the large Andalusian city of Sevilla, and it definitely has one of the craziest and most passionate fan bases around. Viewed as the “little brother” in Sevilla, their fans have a chip on their shoulder and show up en masse to scream and support their club.

Mestalla (Valencia CF)

The National Basketball Association is one of the world’s most exciting and dynamic sports leagues. The best hoopers in the entire world square off from October to June every year for a chance to claim the NBA title.

One of the main draws of the league is its fantastic arenas and game-day experiences. If you’re a fan looking to dive head-first into what the NBA’s passion and excitement feel like, here are three arenas you must visit.

Madison Square Garden: New York Knicks

The New York Knicks’ home arena of Madison Square Garden is considered a Mecca of basketball and with good reason. This Manhattan arena is full to the brim with over 20,000 rabid fans and New York celebrities for every home game, who cheer on the Knicks in sickness and in health.

Staples Center: Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers

On the other coast is the Staples Center, which was finished in 1999 and is considered to be one of the best places to see an NBA game in the country. The Los Angeles Lakers are the most famous tenant here, but the Clippers also put on a show in a city where there is live basketball multiple times per week to see.

Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York City is one of the most iconic sports landmarks on the planet. This cathedral of baseball, whose new iteration opened for the 2009 season, is a must-visit for any sports fan who has the pleasure of visiting New York from April to October.

If you are lucky enough to go to this unbelievable stadium, you must do these things before leaving.

Take the Subway to and from the Game

Any true New Yorker who goes to see the Yankees takes the subway to and from the game, as it’s a great way to spend some extra time with fellow diehards before arriving at the stadium. Yankees passion runs deep on the subway trains to and from the stadium, and this is an experience you won’t want to miss.

Visit Monument Park

One of the highlights of the stadium is a collection of plaques and retired numbers just beyond the center-field fence. This “open air museum” is an unrivaled collection of artifacts related to the history of Major League Baseball’s most storied franchise.

Participate in the “Roll Call”

Yankee Stadium’s most raucous fans are located in the right-field bleachers of the stadium. These fans, known as the “Bleacher Creatures,” have a tradition of going through all of the players on the Yankees’ lineup for every given day, yelling their names, and receiving acknowledgment like a hat tip from each player. It’s a magical tradition that every baseball fan should live at least once.
