Sweden is one of the most lauded countries in all of Europe. Residing within the Scandinavian region of Northern Europe, Sweden is an excellent place to visit if you’re looking for a fun vacation. There are numerous cities in this country that can provide an excellent time for family, couple, and solo adventures—but which cities are the best? Here are three amazing cities you should check out in Sweden.

Stockholm

Let’s get the most obvious one out of the way. You’d better make sure you stop by Stockholm while in Sweden, considering it’s the most well-known city there, and the country’s capital as well. It stretches across 14 different islands, and the residents call it “beauty on water.” A hotbed of Swedish culture, you can’t go wrong here.

Gothenburg

Gothenburg is a lot more laid back and relaxed than Sweden, and therein lies its magical charm. Walking through this town is like stepping through a time machine into the 17th Century, especially since many canals from that era have been preserved until now—each of them more beautiful than the last.

Helsingborg

If you’re a true history buff, you may forge a deep bond with that of the city of Helsingborg. Due to its unique proximity to Denmark, this city was once a cornerstone for strategic battle stances. Beyond that, there are ancient castles ruins to explore throughout the city, among many other interesting historical sites.

Sweden is an absolutely gorgeous country in the northern hemisphere filled with its own rich culture and history, but boy does it get cold. While there are certainly benefits to visiting Sweden in winter, we prefer to plan our trips so that they fall in the middle of the summer. Not only is it warmer, but at some points you can expect to enjoy almost 20 hours of sunlight per day. Whether you prefer to stay in the city or time the countryside is what you’re after, there’s a place in Sweden perfect for you. Here are some of our favorite Swedish places to visit in the summer.

Stockholm

This one may seem obvious, but the Swedish capital is a must-visit any time of year. In the summer, tourists can enjoy attractions such as open-air markets and museums that aren’t open in the winter. It’s also a lot more comfortable to ferry out to the islands off the coast without those harsh winter winds.

Österlen

Head south to the region of Österlen in Sweden’s Scania province to take in the country’s quaint beaches and some of the greenest grass you’ll ever see. For entertainment, be sure to check out the area’s many markets and festivals, which are held year-round.

Dalarna

The Swedish county of Dalarna is one of the best locations to enjoy the country’s landscape. Hike the emerald forests, swim in the sapphire lakes, and check out the local villages and cities. We recommend Falun, a UNESCO world heritage site and home to one of the world’s largest copper mines.

Museum lovers will feel right at home in Stockholm because this city happens to be home to countless attractions of this kind. They cover everything from art and history to science and technology, but some of the museums in the Swedish capital happen to be pretty unique and specific—including these three.

Vasa Museum

Vasa Museum is one of Stockholm’s most popular landmarks, and you don’t have to be a naval history nerd to be crazy about it. This museum is best known for putting the historic ship Vasa on full display and giving it another chance to shine after it ended up sinking on its maiden voyage in the 17th century.

Museum of Spirits

If you’re looking for an attraction that’s a museum and bar wrapped into one, it doesn’t get much better than the Museum of Spirits. Its exhibits are dedicated to exploring the history and culture of alcohol in Sweden, but you can also visit a bar and an art gallery on its grounds.

ABBA The Museum

ABBA is one of the most iconic musical acts to come out of Sweden, so it’s not a surprise to see there’s an entire museum dedicated to their legacy in Stockholm. It features everything from interactive exhibits and memorabilia to the dance floor and studio.

Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is one of those cities that you can explore for days, weeks, and even months, without getting bored. But not many people have that luxury, so we decided to help out a bit and point out some hidden gems you shouldn’t miss during your visit. Check them out below.

Djurgården

Djurgården is one of Stockholm’s islands that gets overlooked by tourists due to its reputation of being a residential area. But that is a mistake since the place has plenty of intriguing attractions, including the Blå porten (Blue Gate) monument, Gröna Lund Amusement Park, and The ABBA Museum.

Hornstulls Marknad

Hornstulls Marknad is a weekend street market that locals love and tourist usually don’t know about. Located in the Södermalm area, the market offers a chance to get to know the culture of the city, sample Swedish cuisine, and get your hands on antiques and vintage items.

Sankt Eriksgatan Street

Sankt Eriksgatan street will be a dream come true for collectors and music lovers. Here you’ll find record shops selling all sorts of vinyl records, both old and new, as well as various second-hand collectibles from the world of movies, music, and video games.

Monteliusvagen

It’s easy to miss out on Monteliusvagen, which is really a shame. This pathway offers an opportunity to get away from the city’s noise while providing arguably the best view of Stockholm’s skyline.

When most people think of visiting Europe, countries like France and Italy are the first to come to mind, but the Nordic countries shouldn’t be overlooked. Sweden in particular is a beautiful country with plenty to offer any traveler, especially those who enjoy nature. There’s history to discover in the capital of Stockholm and peace to be found in one of the country’s ancient forests. Try some lingonberry jam alongside herring or mashed potatoes. Whatever you look for on a trip, you’re sure to find something in Sweden.

Gamla Stan, Stockholm

This is the city’s Old Town, dating all the way back to the 13th century. The colorful buildings and colorful streets make for some great photos, and for those who love history, there are a number of museums and churches.

Take a Boat Tour

Stockholm is actually made up of 40 different islands connected by bridges. Local companies offer all kinds of different tours both around as well as to the different islands. Enjoy a short trip over just a couple of hours or make a day of it.

Abisko National Park, Lapland

If you’re looking for a place with a bit more nature than Stockholm, head north to Abisko National Park. This park is over 100 years old and features one of Scandinavia’s largest lakes. For a few weeks in the summer the park experiences sunlight 24 hours a day, and in the winter it’s possible to see the Northern Lights! Just be sure to bundle up. Abisko is actually located within the Arctic Circle.

Sweden is a beautiful country with a rich history and culture, as well as amazing natural wonders. If you’re planning on visiting, it might be hard to pin down the best spots to check out, especially if you want to go beyond the biggest tourist spots. Here are some awesome places to visit that will give you a taste of just how unique a country Sweden is.

Ice Hotel

At the northernmost point of Sweden is Lapland, which is covered with ice and snow in the winter and is a great place for water sports in the summer thanks to the beautiful rushing river Torne. Using ice from the river which freezes in the winter, a local phenomenon is built: the world’s first hotel made of ice. Each year it is reformed in a new shape, and many of the rooms actually allow you to sleep in a decorated cavern made entirely of ice and snow.

Sigtuna

Less than an hour outside of Stockholm is Sweden’s very first town, Sigtuna. Its roots go all the way back to the Viking Age, with some buildings still standing since its founding in 980 BCE. There you can view medieval churches and ruins as well as modern boutique shops, bakeries, and bookstores.

Drottningholm Palace

Just like any self-respecting European nation, Sweden has a beautiful several-hundreds-years old palace where its royal family resides. Built in 1699, this palace lies on the island of Lovö, just a ferry ride away from Stockholm. In addition to the palace itself, you can view its terraced sculpture gardens and its magnificent theatre with its own theatre museum.
