If COVID-19 taught us one thing, it’s how important it is to clean surfaces. You may not think of cleaning your luggage after a trip, but considering how many different environments it’s been exposed to and the number of hands that have touched it, wiping down your suitcase after traveling is not the worst idea.

Step #1

You can’t begin the cleaning process until you’ve taken everything out. Unpack the contents of your suitcase, bearing in mind any items that may have fallen from where you placed them, and those that you tucked away in compartments.

Step #2

Once your bag is empty, the true cleaning can begin. Begin by removing any luggage tags and stickers on the outside of your case. Then, using a damp cloth or disinfectant wipe, clean the exterior areas of your bag. Handles, zippers, and wheels are all playgrounds for bacteria thanks to being touched frequently and rolling across various surfaces, so scrub them well.

Step #3

Open the suitcase and vacuum the interior. Get a disinfectant spray or isopropyl alcohol and spray down the inside of your bag. Allow the spray to sit for a few minutes before wiping it off to ensure that any germs that may be lurking are destroyed.

Step #4

Let your luggage breathe. Leave the case open and allow it to air dry fully before closing it up and putting it away.

As much as we love the look of a classic black suitcase, we have to admit that they don’t do us any favors when it comes time to navigate baggage claim. We’ve definitely picked up the wrong luggage while waiting for our own to appear on the belt more than once and had minor panic attacks upon noticing that another traveler has mistakenly grabbed ours.

To save ourselves time and prevent potential luggage swap mishaps, we’ve been replacing our old black suitcases with bright and colorful alternatives. Here are a few that have helped to make baggage claim quick and painless.

Monos Terracotta

We’re of the belief that terracotta is underrated as a color, and discovering terracotta suitcases by Canadian travel brand Monos has only further solidified our convictions. They’re dark enough to hide any potential scratches and scuff marks, yet bright enough to stand out in a crowd.

Vera Bradley Navy Garden

Yes, the same Vera Bradley who made those quilted duffle bags we all had in middle school. She’s still around, and she makes high-quality luggage in a range of fun prints and colors that are easy to spot in a sea of black bags.

July Electric Green

July is an Australian brand with a focus on creating high-quality luggage at an affordable price point. Their designed-to-last, beautiful-to-look-at pieces are available in both classic and vibrant colors. We especially love this limited-edition kelly green.

As much as we love traveling, it can definitely get expensive. The costs of flights, hotels, and food can add up, so we like to try to save money wherever we can. One of the best ways is by keeping an eye out for seasonal sales, and this Black Friday, you can be sure that there are a few we definitely plan to take advantage of. We’ve scoured the internet and rounded up some of the best holiday deals on travel essentials and accessories that you won’t want to miss out on.

Away Suitcases

Away is one of our favorite brands for luggage and travel accessories of all kinds, but they’re definitely not one we’d consider to be especially affordable. This Black Friday, they’re offering $50 off when you purchase 2 suitcases and $100 off any 3 as well as up to 40% off select accessories.

Beats Headphones

Nothing can make or break a flight like noisy and disruptive neighbors, so we always make sure to bring noise-canceling headphones in our carry-ons. Black Friday is a great time to take advantage of deals like $200 off Beats Studio3 Wireless Noise-Canceling Over-Ear Headphones on Amazon or $50 off Beats Studio Buds True Wireless Noise-Canceling Bluetooth Earbuds at Target.

Manta Masks

Manta Sleep Masks are our go-to product whenever we want a good night’s sleep, but they’re especially helpful on flights as they create 100% blackout without putting any pressure on our eyes. For Black Friday, they’re offering 15% off all orders over $99, 20% off when you spend $149, and 25% off purchases $199+.

If you follow any travel accounts on Instagram, you may be familiar with AWAY, a luggage company that all of the most popular travel influencers seem to have worked with at one point or another. While they’re more than likely being paid to promote the brand, we have to admit that AWAY does make great suitcases, and they now make travel accessories as well. Especially on long-haul flights, good travel accessories can really make all the difference, and we’ve found that this line totally lives up to the brand’s hype. Here are a few of our favorite pieces.

The Neck Pillow

There’s nothing worse than falling asleep on a plane and waking up to a stiff neck, but fortunately you can prevent this with AWAY’s adjustable neck pillow. It has a foam core and is made with fabric designed to keep you cool.

F.A.R. Duffel Bags

F.A.R. stands for For All Routes, and this collection was designed with experienced travelers in mind. The duffles are great for throwing a few things in before a weekend getaway but also work perfectly as carry-ons for long flights.

Organizational Cubes

New collections mean new colors, and the F.A.R. collection includes some really fun ones. We love the way these neon shoe dividers help keep us organized when we’ve got a lot to fit into our suitcases.

When you head out on a long trip, it is totally normal to take a ton of stuff with you in your suitcase. From clothes to gadgets to gifts, you will almost certainly put a lot of valuable things in your baggage on the way to your destination and on the way home. It is super important to ensure that your suitcase is safe from damage, possible theft, and any other sort of bad things that could happen to it in transit.

The first and most important thing that you can do to protect your baggage is to buy a suitcase that holds up under all kinds of conditions. As we all know, baggage handlers, train luggage racks, and baggage holds can result in your suitcase being knocked around and roughed up. Be sure to buy one made out of durable material like polycarbonate or aluminum.

In addition, if you are traveling to a place where some theft is possible, there are two possible things that can help you secure what’s in your suitcase. The first is a security-approved lock, which keeps the necessary security forces able to access your baggage for routine checks yet prevents thieves from entering.

Also, a luggage wrap can deter thieves who hang out at the baggage claim areas or in unguarded spots in public transportation. It’s almost impossible to cut off this plastic wrap quickly in order to steal something, making it a great way to keep would-be-robbers from taking anything.

Implement all of these three strategies and you will have nothing to worry about when it comes to your bags on your next trip!
