The Trans Siberian Railway is the perfect example for a trip that is about the journey and not the destination. The 5,772 mile-long journey will take you through the port town of Vladivostok, through pines and spruces of taiga forest, along the shores of the impossibly beautiful lake Baikal, and between the peaks of the Ural Mountains all the way to Moscow. However, there are a few essential things to know before you embark on your journey.

The entire ride takes about 50 hours to complete. That is a very long time, so of course, you’ll want to make some stops along the way. Figure out in advance where you want to stay overnight, and which side trips are unmissable. Some trains only go every other day, others are very slow. Make sure your itinerary aligns with the schedule of the trains.

There is no Wi-fi on the Trans-Siberian train, and since you’re going to spend long hours on it, it’s best to bring books, games, and anything else to entertain yourself on the way. There are power outlets on the train so you have the option to watch movies or TV shows that you’ve previously downloaded.

Lastly, know that this adventure is surprisingly affordable. It’s easy to live cheaply in Russia, but if you do want to splurge, you can find excellent value for money.

We can freely say that Vladivostok is one of the most underestimated cities in the world. When you first see it, you can’t help but wonder how this place isn’t more famous.

Vladivostok, literally meaning the ruler of the East, is the unofficial capital of Asian Russia and one of the most important ports in the region.

Vladivostok offers a mix of civilizations that can rarely be encountered, as it is the perfect combination of Russian, Slavic European and Asian culture that developed into a unique society.

The architecture of the city is enchanting and, interestingly, the tiger as an animal is really present in the city in the form of statues and images – this is because the Amur tiger is the beloved symbol of Vladivostok.

But despite its old and classical architecture, the city also offers very advanced and modern quarts that show the progress Vladivostok has made in the last few decades.

Some of the most famous sites of the city include the beautiful squares, the harbor and, of course, the city center. The marvelous Vladivostok Fortress is another beautiful landmark overlooking the sea.

Generally, it is one of Russia’s most beautiful cities and should be on everyone’s travel list. Bonus points if you visit it via the Trans-Siberian Railway.

The luxury of a train has been underestimated in recent years. While it is fabulous to get across the ocean in 6 hours on a plane, there is  splendor in taking the long way to your destination.

Discovery can be made, that you could never plan for, by taking a ferry ride, train ride or a road trip. The actual experience of transportation can be part of the joy of traveling. Especially true, is the charm and adventure of taking the Trans Siberian Railway.

The Trans Siberian Railway is the longest running train system in the world, spanning across Russia and Asia at over 9,000 km of distance. The train transports about a third of Russia’s imports and exports but also serves as a beautiful and calm ride for travelers.
