Airline food is, well, not the best. Much like hospitals, planes have earned a reputation for serving pre-prepared meals that you probably would not be eating if you did not find yourself in that situation.

Although trained chefs are the ones making the food, and effort is put in for it to taste good, flavors and textures definitely change once heated up. And, of course, being at that altitude.

According to studies, dry air in the cabin alters our sense of smell which greatly affects our sense of taste. With both being weakened, food tends to taste bland while up in the air. One flavor which is not impacted, however, is umami, which is why tomato juice is so popular on flights.

Unlike restaurants, planes don’t have a menu that you can order from so to find something that suits your tastebuds. But this hack will ensure you don’t go hungry while flying.

If you don’t feel like indulging in the plane food on your next trip, pack along a cup noodle. It is important that it’s the kind to which you can just add boiling water and which comes with its own cup. Then, when the flight attendant comes around to offer hot beverages, simply request that hot water is poured into your noodles.

Bon appetit!
