There’s no other way to put it—air travel is stressful. From hidden fees to long lines and flight delays, sometimes it feels like it’d be easier to just stay home. While there’s not much we can do about prices or wait times, all of our time spent in airports has taught us a thing or two about getting through TSA without a hitch.

A smooth security experience can mean the difference between missing your flight and arriving at your destination relaxed and ready for a good time. If you’ve got travel plans in the near future, we recommend making a checklist you can refer to while you pack.

Know What You Can Bring

Leaving prohibited items at home is one of the easiest ways to make sure you get through security as quickly as possible. Pack liquids and sharp or dangerous objects in your checked luggage, and check the TSA “What can I bring?” website for information about items you’re not sure about.

Dress Light

There’s nothing wrong with traveling in style, but taking off shoes and belts can add a significant amount of time to your security experience. Save any fancy shoes and accessories for your destination and go with light, comfortable clothing and slip-on shoes at the airport.

Choose Your Bags Carefully

Choose a carry-on bag that allows you to keep your passport and other necessary documents in one secure location that’s easy to access. Look for options with inside pockets, which can also be helpful for traveling with laptops and other electronic devices.
