If you’re not a huge fan of summertime heat, any place you visit probably seems like the hottest place on the planet, but that title actually belongs to Dallol – a collapsed volcano crater, located in the Danakil Depression of Ethiopia.

The term “Dallol” was coined by the Afar people, and it stands for dissolution or disintegration. It may seem breathtaking in pictures thanks to the rusty orange, yellow, and green salt formations that make it what it is, but don’t let its picturesque exterior fool you.

This remote area is subjected to the highest average temperatures on the planet, consistently hovering at 35°C. Things get even more extreme in the summer when the temperature even reaches 49°C, but that’s not stopping eager tourists from seeing it in person.

Boiling hot springs, ponds and geysers transformed this area into a hypnotizing riot of color, giving it a distinctive Martina vibe. Chemical compounds released from the earth are responsible for its vibrant complexion, which is straight out of this world.
