A California Airport is Allowing Non-Travelers to Meet their Loved Ones at the Gate

We’ve all seen the movies. The ones where one person runs to the airport gate to dramatically declare their love for another, or bid a tearful goodbye to their lover. But as anyone who has actually flown knows, getting to that gate is far from easy.

Airport security is pretty strict when it comes to who is allowed to go through, and unless your name is on a ticket, chances are slim that you will be permitted. However, a Californian airport is now offering loved ones the chance to go behind the scenes.

The Ontario International Airport, situated around 40 miles east of Los Angeles, is set to launch a new program that allows non-travelers to secure an online visitor pass which will enable them to go right to the gate. That means they can meet passengers as soon as they arrive, or spend those last precious moments with them before they depart.

“We all remember the excitement of being able to meet arriving family and friends as they get off the plane,” stated Dean Brown, the ONT Public Safety Administrator. “ONT+ is a way to bring back some of that experience from decades ago, in a safe and secure manner.”

Those wanting to take advantage of the ONT+ initiative will have to submit an online application within 7 days of the intended visit, and if approved, the free pass will be e-mailed to them. Non-travelers will then be subject to the same TSA security rules as travelers, including not bringing large liquids with them.
