How to Make Flying Economy More Comfortable

We all wish we could afford to fly business class all of the time, but unfortunately, flight tickets are already so expensive that it seems ridiculous we should pay even more. For some, the added cost may be worth it, but if you’re not in a position to be spending more money than you have to on a flight, there are a few small steps you can take to make flying economy class more comfortable.

Pick the Right Seat

Nothing will make your flight quite as uncomfortable as getting stuck in a middle seat one row in front of the bathroom. Book your flight early enough that all of the good seats aren’t taken and look for an aisle seat as far away from high-traffic areas as possible. We love the website SeatGuru to help us find the best options for our flight.

Be Strategic

If you’re flying with a partner or friend, have one of you choose the aisle seat and the other choose the window in a particular row. It’s a risk, but it’s less likely that someone will choose the middle seat between you unless the flight is full. Worst case, you can ask them to switch.

Pack Your Own Amenities

One of the main perks of first class is all of the little amenities that airlines give out to first class passengers—but the truth is that most of them are no different than items you can pick up for yourself beforehand and pack in your carryon. We suggest a nice eye mask, travel pillow, and blanket.
