Amazing Facts About Prague’s Dancing House

The Dancing House is one of the biggest wonders of modern architecture you can find in Prague, and it took less than three decades to become one of the city’s top tourist attractions. Here’s a couple of amazing facts that will make you fall in love with this unusual building.

Original Name

Dancing House is still sometimes referred to by its nickname Fred and Ginger. This was supposed to be its original name, and it’s a nod to famous dancers Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers since the shape of the building resembles a pair of dancers.

Dancing Structure

The Dancing House is the creative effort of the architects Vlado Milunić and Frank Gehry, and its signature “dancing” shape is supported by 99 concrete panels, of different dimensions and shapes. The tower that’s made of rock represents Fred Astaire, while the one made of glass represents Ginger Rogers.

Huge Honor

Design of Dancing House was controversial when it started building in 1992 since it was the complete opposite of the Baroque, Gothic, and Art Nouveau styles that Prague is known for, but the public eventually embraced it. It’s even featured on a gold 2.000 Czech koruna coin, as a part of the “Ten Centuries of Architecture” series.
