How to Prepare for a Dog-Friendly Vacation

Leaving your pet while you go on a vacation is not always ideal. There are many sites on the internet listing hotels and vacation packages that you can bring your beloved pup, so here are a few things to consider before you make that booking.

Identification

It is now a legal requirement to have your dog microchipped in England and Wales, but it’s also worth getting additional name tags. Get an extra name tag engraved with your vacation address so if your dog does wander off, they can be traced back to you faster. It’s always a good idea to make sure any tag also has your current mobile phone number.

GPS Trackers

If you keep up with modern gadgetry, it may be worth investing in a GPS tracker for your furry friend. That way, if you are in an unknown area, you will at least always know where your dog is.

Retractable Lead

If your pet lead is long, make sure you have a short lead packed as well (or vice versa). There will be situations where your dog can run with a longer lead, but equally, there will be areas where you will need more control. It’s worth investing in a good retractable lead so that you are prepared for every situation.

Familiar Objects

It may be disconcerting for your pet to sleep in a different environment whether that’s a hotel, tent or cottage. To ensure your canine companion gets a good night’s sleep, pack their bed or basket and bring it with you. It is also a good idea to pack their water and food bowl for additional security.

Hydrate

Traveling water bowls are a good investment as you can fold them away and take them with you on a day out. Make sure you keep bottled water with you as well, as drinking from streams can make a dog sick. If you are vacating in a hotter climate, it’s even more important to ensure that you have a good water supply for your pet.
