When we think of top culinary destinations in the world, Finland isn’t exactly the first country to come to mind, but that doesn’t mean that it’s without its fair share of epicurean gems. While fish and meat typically serve as staples, Finnish cuisine as a whole includes a wide variety of ingredients that speak to the local tradition and landscape. If you’re a foodie with plans to visit Finland in the works, read on to learn more about some must-try Finnish dishes.

Squeaky Cheese

Known locally as “leipäjuusto,” squeaky cheese is a fresh cheese with a mild flavor and a distinctive, slightly rubbery texture. It’s traditionally served in pizza-shaped slices with cloudberry jam, some cinnamon sugar, or even in a cup of hot coffee, though some restaurants use it as an alternative to feta in salads as well.

Kalakukko

Finland’s position in the Baltic Sea means that seafood is a mainstay in its cuisine, one of the most popular dishes being a savory fish pie called kalakukko. While variations of kalakukko exist throughout the country, they all consist of some type of local fish baked inside a loaf of rye bread. If you’re feeling brave, enjoy it with a tall glass of buttermilk for a traditional Finnish experience.

Pulla

No food tour would be complete without a little dessert, and when it comes to Finnish treats, you can’t go wrong with korvapuusti. Literally translated as “slapped ears,” the Finnish take on cinnamon rolls features a cardamom-infused dough and a sprinkle of pearl sugar for added sweetness. Finns love korvapuusti so much that October 4th is celebrated annually as Korvapussti Day.

Finland is a country that should be on everyone’s travel list. It has a breathtaking nature, an abundance of opportunities for winter sports, vibrant culture, and intriguing cuisine. But before you actually visit it, there are some things you should know.

You Won’t Need Cash

Cash is somewhat of an afterthought in Finland because almost everyone uses cashless payment options. You will be able to pay with your credit card or mobile app everywhere you go, regardless of the size of the transaction or type of purchase.

There is No Need to Tip

Tipping is not common in Finland, and you are not expected to show your gratitude for services in this manner. The service staff is paid a sufficient salary for their work while the service fees are added to the bill.

Almost Everyone Speaks English

English is widely spoken in Finland, especially in urban areas. Even if you find yourself in a rural area, locals will at least know a few English phrases.

Every Season Brings a Different Experience

You can visit Finland at any time of the year, but your experience will be a lot different depending on the season. For example, during winter, you will be able to enjoy winter festivals and winter sports. Summer, on the other hand, is best for exploring the country’s natural beauties and cultural attractions.

Finland is ahead of the times.

For the first time, travelers from Helsinki to the United Kingdom will be able to board a flight using a digital copy of their passport.

It is no secret that we live in a digital age where we order everything online, have video meetings with people on the other side of the globe, and use our faces to unlock our phones. But one thing that has always remained in the physical realm is passports.

The Finnish Border Control is taking part in a pilot project that will see Digital Travel Credentials (DTC) used in a “real border control environment” for what is believed to be the first time in the world.

The DTC is a digital version of a physical passport that supposedly equally reliable and will allow smooth and fast border crossings without compromising security.

Currently, the trial is only available to Finnish citizens and involves registering at a police station where a valid physical passport is required to make a digital version. It will also include signing a consent form and a photo being taken for facial recognition.

The DTC can be used on Finnair return flights between Helsinki and the UK until the end of February 2024.

Finland is known as the land of a thousand lakes, the home of Santa Claus, and a pure winter wonderland. It also just so happens to be the happiest country in the world for the last six years running. If you need a little more joy in your life, don’t miss out on doing these things.

Experience the Northern Lights

If you’re looking for magic, this is it. The aurora borealis turns the sky into a kaleidoscope of pinks, purples, yellows, and green, and Lapland and Kilpisjärvi are some of the top places to see it. The best time to catch this natural phenomenon is from September to April.

Go on a Husky Safari

Animal lovers, this one is for you. Imagine getting to explore the Finnish wilderness by being pulled along on a sled by a team of enthusiastic huskies! When you arrive at your destination, you can always try your hand at traditional ice fishing. Drill a hole in the ice, throw in your rod, and pray that something bites.

Simmer Down in a Sauna

Saunas are an integral part of Finnish culture, and they’re a great way to unwind after a day of exploring. There are many public saunas in Finland, but if you want a more private experience, you can rent a cottage with its own sauna.

Pay a Visit to Santa Claus

Yep, Santa lives in Finland. Take a trip to Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi where you can meet the big guy himself, take a ride on a reindeer sled, and even cross the Arctic Circle.

Churches showcase remarkable architectural beauty and historical significance, and they’re worth checking out in each new city you visit. Helsinki is no different, and you’ll stumble upon some pretty show-stopping and unique churches while exploring the capital of Finland.

Helsinki Cathedral

Located at Senate Square, this cathedral is one of the most distinctive landmarks of Helsinki’s cityscape. It’s one of the city’s timeless symbols, and you’ll recognize its signature green domes from a mile away.

Temppeliaukion Church

Also known as Church of the Rock or Rock Church, Temppeliaukion is one of Helsinki’s most unique attractions. Built directly into solid rock, this church will knock you off your feet with its natural rock walls and copper dome ceiling.

Kamppi Chapel

Located in the very heart of Helsinki’s busy Kamppi neighborhood, this chapel was been built as a place of silent reflection. What makes it so unique is its minimalist wooden design, and you probably wouldn’t even guess it’s a chapel at first glance.

Uspenski Cathedral

One of the largest Orthodox churches in Western Europe, Uspenski Cathedral is located near Helsinki’s harbor and it will catch your eye with its red-brick walls, which stand in stark contrast to its distinctive green domes.

It may seem as though the world is in chaos, but there are still many reasons to be happy. That is proven by the 2023 edition of the World Happiness Report.

Each year, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network publishes a report based on data from 137 countries. Citizens are asked to rate themselves from 0-10 based on their level of happiness. Six factors are taken into account: social support, income, health, freedom, generosity, and absence of corruption.

“This year’s report features many interesting insights,” says Professor Lara Aknin, one of the authors of the report. “One that I find particularly interesting and heartening has to do with pro-sociality. For a second year, we see that various forms of everyday kindness, such as helping a stranger, donating to charity, and volunteering, are above pre-pandemic levels. Acts of kindness have been shown to both lead to and stem from greater happiness.”

For the 6th year in a row, Finland has been recognized as the happiest country in the world. With a rating of 7.8, the nation ranks high when it comes to generosity, income, freedom of choice, and life expectancy.

In contrast, Afghanistan, which is currently under Taliban rule, came in last place with a rating of only 1.8.

These are the Top 20 Happiest Countries in 2023:

  1. Finland
  2. Denmark
  3. Iceland
  4. Israel
  5. The Netherlands
  6. Sweden
  7. Norway
  8. Switzerland
  9. Luxembourg
  10. New Zealand
  11. Austria
  12. Australia
  13. Canada
  14. Ireland
  15. United States

  18. Czechia

  1. Finland
  2. Denmark
  3. Iceland
  4. Israel
