New Zealand probably isn’t the first place you think of when someone mentions glaciers, but it turns out it’s home to quite a few. If you’re in the mood to go glacier hunting while exploring this island country, here are three show-stopping glaciers worth putting on your travel itinerary.

Franz Josef Glacier

Franz Josef Glacier aka Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere is the most popular glacier in Westland Tai Poutini National Park. There are many hikes and even helicopter rides in this area leading you to this stunning glacier, and despite many recent environmental changes that impacted it, Franz Josef remains one of the most accessible glaciers in all of New Zealand.

Fox Glacier

Located in close proximity to Franz Josef, Fox Glacier aka Te Moeka o Tuawe will knock you off your feet with its stunning natural beauty. It is located in the heart of Westland Tai Poutini National Park and the Fox River and nearby forests add to the uniqueness of this beautiful area.

Tasman Glacier

Haupapa aka Tasman Glacier is the largest one of all the glaciers in New Zealand, and it’s one of the main attractions of the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. Glaciers actually cover approximately 40% of this national park, so there are quite a few you can explore during your visit after checking out Tasman.

Tourists usually head to Argentina when searching for South America’s most spectacular glaciers, but you can also find quite a few in its neighboring country of Chile. Amazing glaciers are scattered all around it, and here are three that you should definitely check out during your visit.

Grey Glacier

The title of Chile’s most picture-perfect glacier belongs to this attraction in the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Grey Glacier flows into the lake of the same name, and there are boat tours in the area allowing you to explore its jagged icebergs at a close distance, reaching 6 kilometers in width and over 30 meters in height.

Brüggen Glacier

Another spectacular glacier located within the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, Brüggen is the longest glacier in the southern hemisphere outside Antarctica. It’s also known by the nickname Pío XI Glacier, and it’s one of the rare glaciers in this area to record growth in the past century.

San Rafael Glacier

Laguna San Rafael is one of Chile’s most breathtaking natural wonders, and the glacier named after it is its biggest draw. It’s a part of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field, and the arc-shaped coastal lake surrounding it is just as spectacular as the glacier itself.

Have you ever heard of Tierra del Fuego before?

This little-known destination is located at the southern tip of the continent of South America, and it’s a shame that more people aren’t aware of this magical destination.

When you think about South America, you probably imagine the jungles of Brazil or the snow-capped Andes Mountain chain, but did you know there’s a volcanic landscape near the South Pole that you can visit on this continent?

Tierra del Fuego, which means “Land of Fire” in Spanish, is an archipelago that forms part of the countries of Argentina and Chile. The reality of this dream-like landscape is a cold area full of mountains, gorgeous rivers, and unspoiled landscapes that is worth checking out at least once.

The above picture probably looks like something you’d see in Scandinavia, right? Well, would you believe that it’s actually the city of Ushuaia, located in Argentina? This city stakes a claim as the southernmost city on Earth, and it will give you a whole new vision of what South America can be.

Penguins, sea lions, and volcanoes might not have been what you pictured when you thought of South America, but trust me when I say that Tierra del Fuego is one of the highlights on this diverse and unique continent. Go, and go soon!

The glacial lakes start to melt in late spring and the melt-water makes highways suitable for kayaking.

The best time for kayaking is from June to September, but in June the water has the most wonderful glacial blue color that you won’t believe your eyes. Even though later in the season the water turns clear, it’s still a remarkable experience.

Glacier National Park in Vancouver, British Columbia has the most amazing glacier lakes in the world, which will take your breath away.
