Many of us have enjoyed camping as an annual tradition alongside friends and family ever since we were children. Nights spent around the campfire telling scary stories, with plenty of s’mores, of course, will forever remain etched in our hearts as some of the best in our lives, and we look forward to creating more memories in the years to come. If the joy of it all weren’t enough of an incentive, we’ve also discovered that there are several mental and physical benefits to camping that have us even more excited to plan our next trip to the great outdoors. Read on to learn more about why camping has become our new favorite form of travel.

Stress Reduction

If only for a moment, camping offers us the opportunity to spend time with loved ones, disconnect from the digital world, replacing cell phones and Wi-Fi for fun and fresh air. The absence of everyday pressures combined with the tranquility of nature can help to clear the mind and calm the nervous system. Camping has even been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Physical Fitness

From setting up camp to hiking local trails, camping is inherently physical, especially if you plan to include swimming or other outdoor sports in your itinerary. Though they may not feel like a workout in the traditional sense, these activities provide the same benefits to cardiovascular health and muscle strength as a run on the treadmill or session at the gym—no membership required.

Enhanced Sleep Quality

Light pollution in urban environments and constant exposure to screens can disrupt the body’s natural circadian rhythm, making it difficult to fall asleep and decreasing sleep quality throughout the night. While not a permanent solution, a few nights away from artificial light can help to regulate the body’s internal clock so quality sleep comes naturally. Once you’ve returned home, it’s just a matter of maintaining this new rhythm.

Is there anything in nature more beautiful than waterfalls? The sound of rushing water, the gentle mist, and the feeling of being surrounded by clean, fresh air all come together to create an experience that feels almost otherworldly. Fortunately, you don’t have to travel to another world to enjoy their benefits. The United States is full of amazing waterfalls just waiting to be explored.  Here are a few lesser-known ones we especially love.

Ruby Falls, Tennessee

Ruby Falls is located deep inside Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee. At 145 feet, it’s the tallest underground waterfall open to the public in the entire US. The falls are illuminated with LED lights that make the water appear to glow in different colors. Walking to the falls is a bit of an adventure and involves navigating several narrow passageways, but the reward at the end is well worth it.

Arethusa Falls, New Hampshire

This waterfall is tucked away in the White Mountains and is one of the tallest waterfalls in New Hampshire. The hike to the falls is only about 1.5 miles long, and, although a bit rocky in parts, is easy enough for families with children. We recommend visiting in late spring or early summer when the stream is usually strongest.

Burney Falls, California

Theodore Roosevelt once referred to Burney Falls in Northern California as the “Eighth Wonder of the World” in reaction to its spectacular beauty. The 129-foot waterfall is fed by underground springs and is surrounded by lush greenery, making it a popular spot for hikers and nature lovers alike.

Norway is a small European country along the Arctic Circle, and it’s an absolute paradise for hikers and nature lovers alike. Often referred to as “The Land of the Midnight Sun,” its geographic position means that Norway receives up to 19 hours of sunlight on summer days, while the darkness of winter allows for spectacular views of the Northern Lights. If you’re considering a trip to Norway in the near future, read on to learn more about some of the most breathtaking places worth adding to your itinerary.

Fjords

No sight-seeing tour of Norway would be complete without a visit to some of the country’s majestic fjords, or inlets created by massive glaciers that once occupied the landscape. One of the most notable is Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognizable by its cascading waterfalls and lush vegetation. Visitors can enjoy hiking, rent kayaks, or make a day of it by booking a guided tour.

Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are another absolute must-see for any traveler visiting the northernmost regions of Norway. The city of Tromsø, located 350 kilometers north of the Arctic circle, is often referred to as the “Gateway to the Arctic” and offers an especially great vantage point for the Lights along with plenty of opportunities for whale watching and dog sledding. Plan your trip any time between September and mid-April for the greatest chance of catching a glimpse.

Pulpit Rock

Pulpit Rock, or Preikestolen, should be the first stop for hiking enthusiasts while visiting Norway. Though challenging, the trek to the summit rewards hikers with panoramic views of the Lysefjord below. Prepare to spend 4-5 hours getting to the top.

For anyone obsessed with the outdoors, hiking in Nepal has got to be one of those bucket-list goals that we all dream of achieving. The country is home to the world’s highest mountains, but there are easier trails as well, and every year many thousands flock to the country to witness the wonders of the great outdoors. Due to the country’s harsh climate and unbelievable altitudes, some preparation is definitely advised before heading off on an adventure. Read these tips so you know what to do to make this dream come true.

Start The Cardio Training

To help prepare your body for higher altitudes, and the physical challenge of hiking up steep paths and trails, it is advised to get into the routine of medium to high-intensity cardio training two to three times a week, for three months before you set off. Alongside this, try and get some strength training in too—strong legs (and a strong back) will help you up those hills.

Wear In Your Boots

Good hiking boots are an absolute must. Although higher-end versions come with higher prices, this is one investment you don’t want to skimp on. Do a couple of test hikes on home soil and check that your boots are waterproof, comfortable, and in good condition. Don’t make the mistake of buying a new pair a week before your trip without wearing them in.

Consider Going With A Guide

There are trails and routes which are possible to do without a guide, but having a local’s knowledge and guidance can really take the stress out of navigating and will ensure you have the best experience. Guides can also advise you on what to pack before you set off, saving you from carrying too much extra weight or forgetting an absolute essential. If you’re not prepared to get a guide, do check out online forums where experienced hikers will post about their knowledge and answer any questions you might have. Whilst hiking in Nepal is suitable for a wide range of abilities, it is also not something to be undertaken lightly.

If you prepare your body and your suitcase well, then hiking in Nepal can be an incredible experience. Plan in plenty of rest days, and take all the usual precautions you would when hiking anywhere, such as checking the route before you go and letting people know where you’re heading.

In today’s fast-paced and technology-driven world, finding moments of peace and reconnecting with our inner selves has become increasingly important. One way to achieve this balance is by immersing ourselves in the healing power of nature through invigorating hikes. Nature hikes offer more than just physical exercise, and here’s what those things are.

Healing

As you embark on a nature hike, you leave behind the noise and distractions of daily life, stepping into a serene oasis that allows you to connect with your inner self. The rustling leaves, gentle breeze, and melodious bird songs create a symphony that soothes the soul and encourages introspection.

Finding Solitude

Nature hikes offer the perfect opportunity to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and find solitude in the beauty of natural surroundings. This immersive experience allows you to let go of stress, clear your mind, and be fully present in the moment.

Deep Connection

Part of connecting to ourselves is also about discovering our connection to nature, and the world around us as a whole. The awe-inspiring landscapes, whether it’s towering mountains, cascading waterfalls, or lush forests, remind us of our place in the grand tapestry of life—which can be a truly healing process as well.
