With the new Barbie film set to be released later this year, one of the most popular trends of 2023 so far is an aesthetic referred to as “Barbiecore.” The doll’s signature pink has taken over everywhere from runways to social media, but did you know that there are actually several geographical features that have been naturally pink since before it was cool? From lakes to beaches, these blushing beauties are a must-visit for photographers or anyone looking to add a rosy touch to their social media feeds. Read on to learn more about some locations that we wouldn’t be surprised to see as part of Barbie’s dreamland.

Lake Retba, Senegal

Lake Retba, or Lac Rose, is a mesmerizing pink lake in western Senegal. Its unique color comes from a high concentration of a harmless type of algae that produces a pink pigment in response to the lake’s high salt content. Visitors can swim, take a boat tour, or try sandboarding in the surrounding dunes for a fun adventure.

Fujigoko, Japan

Fujigoko, or “Fuji Five Lakes,” is a lake-filled region at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan. The area is filled with cherry blossom trees, which, come spring, explode into a sea of pink blooms as far as the eye can see. In certain parks, there are very few other tree varieties among them, which creates the appearance of an entirely pink forest. Blossoms peak in mid-April, though the entire blooming period can last for about 4 months total.

Gili Pasir, Indonesia

Gili Pasir is a beach off the island of Lombok in Indonesia best known for its coral pink sand. It’s quite peaceful and ideal for tourists looking to swim, snorkel, or just relax and bask in the sun. As the area surrounding the beach is uninhabited and its location is fairly remote, we recommend booking a tour ahead of time to make the most of your experience.

Hutt Lagoon, Australia

Australia is apparently home to more than just one pink lake. Hutt Lagoon is another beautiful lake you can visit if you want to see these vibrant pink hues in person.

Summer may be on its way out, but that doesn’t mean our desire for beach vacations has disappeared. Give us warm weather, white sandy beaches, and crystal blue water, and we’re happy! If gazing out onto a body of water is your idea of tranquility, you need to add these destinations to your bucket list.

Devil’s Bay, British Virgin Islands

This bay is so gorgeous that it almost feels as though it was created as a deal with the devil himself. If pure turquoise water is what you’re after, Devil’s Bay on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands is the place to head to.

Crater Lake, United States

Part of what makes Oregon’s Crater Lake so unique is that it fills the cavity of a sunken volcano. Something else which makes it unique is that it has no incoming streams or water. As a result, the lake’s water is as clear as you can get! At a depth of 1,943 feet, it is the deepest lake in the United States and a haven for scuba divers with its deep blue hue.

Five Flower Lake, China

Within the Jiuzhaigou National Park in China’s Sichuan province lies the exquisite Five Flower Lake. So clear is the water that visitors can view the fallen tree trunks which have created a criss-cross pattern on the bottom.

We’ve all been there. You’ve been walking through a gorgeous green forest for a few hours on a super hot day. Suddenly, you come across a lake that looks incredibly refreshing. Immediately, your instinct is to take off your shirt and hop in, and we completely understand that urge. Most of the time, you’re probably good to go. But it’s important to do your research beforehand, and make sure it’s safe.

Safe Trails

One way to know if the lake is safe to go in is if you’re part of a tour group, and the trail is a known landmark. Usually, if the tour guide says it’s okay to jump in, you can trust them. If the lake is a destination in and of itself, and there are articles online saying it’s okay to swim in it, then jump on in!

Uncharted Waters

The lakes that you need to be weary about are the ones that have very little information online. If you’re trekking off the beaten path and see a lake that isn’t part of any tour, we’d recommend keeping a relative distance. You don’t know what lives in that lake. It may be inhabited by creatures that wouldn’t take kindly to an unwanted guest looking for a fun splash.

Uganda is worth the visit for its natural wonders alone, ranging from mountains to waterfalls. Lakes in this African country also happen to be top of the line and deserve a spot on your bucket list. Here are three beautiful lakes that you should consider checking out while in Uganda.

Lake Bunyonyi

Located close to the border with Rwanda, Bunyonyi is one of Uganda’s most stunning lakes. This scenic highland lake is surrounded by 29 verdant islands, and it’s best known for its green and lush terraced hills. It’s a popular location for swimming, canoeing, and birdwatching since over 200 bird species live in this area.

Lake Mburo

Lake Mburo may not be extremely impressive on its own, but it’s worth the visit for its surrounding area. It’s located in the heart of the Lake Mburo National Park, which is home to multiple lakes and wetlands, but it’s best known for its diverse wildlife, with many safari tours.

Lake Albert

The seventh-largest lake in Africa, Lake Albert is one of Uganda’s Great Lakes in the upper Nile system. It’s home to many native aquatic and semi-aquatic animals, ranging from Nile crocodiles and African softshell turtles to around 55 species of fish.

Egypt is safely tucked away between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, so it goes without saying that it’s home to some stunning beaches, but did you know its lakes are also top of the line? Here are three charming lakes that will make you see this African country in a whole new light.

Siwa Lake

Located in the heart of Siwa Oasis, one of Egypt’s most picturesque natural wonders, this salt lake offers a truly unique experience. Due to its close proximity to a salt mine, Siwa Lake contains a huge amount of salt and you don’t have to be a pro swimmer to fully enjoy it.

Lake Burullus

Lake Burullus is Egypt’s second-largest lake and it’s not really a popular tourist attraction. It’s better known for its natural beauty, including salt swamps, many species of fishes and birds that inhabit it, and the historical settlement Paralus, which lies underneath it.

Lake Nasser

One of the largest man-made lakes not just in Egypt, but in the entire world, Lake Nasser is located on the Nile River between Egypt and Sudan. Boat safaris and sightseeing cruises are pretty popular in this area, and the visit to the Abu Simbel Temple is a reason enough to join them.

Slovenia is one of Europe’s most underrated countries, but it’s worth the visit for its natural beauty alone. Its lakes are some of its most breathtaking natural wonders and here are three that deserve a spot on your bucket list if you ever find yourself in this charming country.

Lake Bled

Lake Bled is one of the first places that comes to mind when someone mentions Slovenia and it’s definitely its most Instagrammable attraction. Located close to the capital of Ljubljana, this scenic lake is surrounded by the Julian Alps from all sides, and you can take a boat ride to a tiny island with a historic church during your visit.

Lake Bohinj

Lake Bled may be the most popular attraction of this kind in Slovenia, but Lake Bohinj is actually the largest. It covers 790 acres in the heart of Triglav National Park, and the high mountain peaks are beautifully reflected in its tranquil waters.

Lake Jasna

Artificial Lakes in Slovenia are just as stunning as natural ones and Lake Jasna is one of the best. It consists of two interconnected lakes along the Pisnica River and you’ll know that you’ve successfully reached it once you spot the bronze statue of an Ibex standing on the rock.

Most people visiting Ecuador are there to discover its countless natural wonders and its lakes are amongst the very best. They can be found in every corner of this South American country and here are three that will make you fall in love with Ecuador and never look back!

Quilotoa Lake

If we had to pick a single lake that you have to visit while in Ecuador, Quilotoa would make the cut. This crater lake was formed by a collapse of the Quilotoa volcano hundreds of years ago and it’s now 250-meter-deep and filled with crystal clear waters in the heart of the Ecuadorian Andes.

Cuicocha Lake

Crater lakes are scattered all around Ecuador and Cuicocha also falls under that category. Its name literary translates as “guinea pig lake” since there are several tiny islands in the middle of its laguna and the largest one is shaped like a guinea pig.

Yahuarcocha Lake

Unlike the previous two lakes, Yawarkucha aka “Blood Lake” wasn’t formed at the crater of a volcano. It was formed from glacial meltwater and it owes this name to a tragic battle that allegedly took place on its shores during the Inca Empire era in the 15th century.

Nicaragua is safely tucked away between the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean, but its lakes are as beautiful as its shores. If you want to discover the natural beauty of this Central American country in its full glory, here are three lakes that you shouldn’t miss for the world.

Lake Nicaragua

Also known as Cocibolca or Granada, Lake Nicaragua is not only the largest in this country but in all of Central America. In addition to its connection to the history of Caribbean pirates, this lake is best known for its rich biodiversity and it’s home to several species of adapted marine animals, including bull sharks, sawfish, and tarpon.

Lake Apoyo

Located in the very heart of Apoyo Lagoon, this is Nicaragua’s largest volcanic crater lake, and that’s just part of its charm. Its dark sand beaches transformed it into a major tourist attraction and it’s now a popular spot for swimming, kayaking, scuba diving, and many other water sports.

Lake Managua

Nicaragua’s capital city Managua is located on the shores of this stunning lake, also known as Lake Xolotlán. Several nature reserves are located on its shores and the volcanic island of Momotombo is one of the most popular attractions that you should visit in this area.
