Most people visiting Chile are there for its stunning glaciers, geysers, and desert landscapes, but did you know its modern architecture is also top-of-the-line? The capital city of Santiago is home to quite a few impressive contemporary buildings, and here are three worth checking out.

Costanera Center

Some of Santiago’s most imposing skyscrapers are a part of the Costanera Center. This business complex is home to some of Santiago’s most notable modern buildings, including a 62-story high-rise Gran Torre Santiago, a six-floor shopping mall, and three more skyscrapers housing hotels and office buildings.

Museum of Memory and Human Rights

If skyscrapers simply aren’t your thing and you want to explore more grounded, low-key examples of contemporary architecture, the Museum of Memory and Human Rights is the place to be. Its stunning glass-and-copper was designed by a group of Brazilian architects from the firm Estudio America.

Santiago Bahá’í Temple

Santiago Bahá’í Temple was designed by Canadian architect Siamak Hariri, and it won many awards over the years. Like all Baháʼí houses of worship, this one is circular and nine-sided. It comes with nine entrances, nine pathways, and nine fountains, while its sides are meant to resemble sails separated by glass, allowing the light to come in.

Like most Austrian cities, Graz is home to many renaissance and baroque buildings, but its modern architecture isn’t too shabby, either. Wonders of contemporary architecture are scattered all around this city, and here are three that you shouldn’t miss for the world.

Kunsthaus Graz

Kunsthaus is the leading contemporary art museum in Graz, and you don’t even have to step inside to be wowed by it. Designed by Colin Fournier and Peter Cook, this futuristic building looks straight out of a sci-fi movie thanks to its blob-like structure and glistening dark blue acrylic panels.

Murinsel

Another wonder of modern architecture that Graz wouldn’t be the same without, Murinsel is basically an artificial floating island in the middle of the Mur River. Its sea shell-like structure is connected with two footbridges to both banks of the Mur, and you can find a café, theater, and playground on its premises.

Argos Apartment Buildings

Unlike the previous two buildings, this one doesn’t house a major tourist attraction, but you should still consider visiting it. The Argos apartment buildings are worth checking out because they’re one of the masterpieces of the famed architect Zaha Hadid and their structural glazing façade will leave you speechless.

Each of Canada’s major cities is home to a few gems of modern architecture, no matter how big or small. That also happens to be the case with Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba province, and here are some of the most impressive contemporary buildings that it has in store.

Canadian Museum for Human Rights

Canadian Museum for Human Rights opened its doors in 2008 and its building looks straight out of a sci-fi movie. Antoine Predock, one of the architects behind it, drew inspiration from the natural scenery and open spaces in Canada when coming up with the concept for this visionary building.

Winnipeg Art Gallery

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is one of the city’s most popular cultural institutions and you don’t even have to step inside to be wowed by it. Art center Qaumajuq is the most interesting part of the building for fans of modern architecture and it’s instantly recognizable thanks to its wavy exterior clad with glass and off-white stone.

Royal Canadian Mint

Royal Canadian Mint explores the history of the coin manufacturing process, but its building is anything but old-fashioned. Its sculptural exterior and mirrored, rose-colored glass walls make it one of Winnipeg’s most striking modern buildings.

If you happen to be a fan of modern architecture, Canada will knock you off your feet and you don’t even have to go to Toronto or Montreal to admire it. Edmonton, the capital city of Alberta, is home to quite a few wonders of contemporary architecture, starting with these three stunning buildings.

Art Gallery of Alberta

Art lovers visiting Edmonton shouldn’t miss this gallery for the world. You don’t even have to step inside to be impressed by it because its building is a work of art in itself. Its patinated zinc and stainless-steel exterior is a sight to behold, and you shouldn’t miss the Aurora-inspired room once you step inside.

Telus World of Science

Telus World of Science is Edmonton’s most popular science museum and its building consists of several segments, each one unique in its own right. The most spectacular one was certainly the Zeidler Dome, which happens to be Canada’s largest planetarium dome theatre.

Muttart Conservatory

Botanical gardens often feature spectacular glasshouses, but Muttart Conservatory takes things up a notch. It features four glassed pyramids, with tropical and arid biomes, and they do a great job giving one of Edmonton’s most popular green spaces a modern feel.

Baku is one of those cities where you can find the perfect harmony between east and west, old and new. The capital of Azerbaijan went through the stage of rapid growth in the past few decades and it’s now home to countless modern buildings, but these three are some of its very best.

Flame Towers

Flame Towers are one of Baku’s most recognizable symbols, despite the fact they’ve only been around since 2013. The flame-shaped towers mostly serve as a residential and business complex, but it’s truly impressive to watch them from the outside, especially when epic light shows take place.

Heydar Aliyev Centre

Heydar Aliyev Centre is the work of art of the famed architect Zaha Hadid, and it’s truly a sight to behold. Its white walls and folding shape transformed it into one of Baku’s most popular and recognizable attractions, and you can find an auditorium, art gallery, and a museum on its premises.

Azerbaijan Carpet Museum

Baku is home to a museum dedicated to the history of Azerbaijani carpets and rugs, and you’ll be impressed by it even before you step inside. The building where this museum is housed resembles a rolled-up carpet, finished with traditional gold adornments.

Craft breweries and beautiful surrounding nature are two of Denver’s biggest draws, but there’s more to this city than meets the eye. Colorado’s capital will also impress you with its amazing modern architecture, and here are some if its very best examples.

Denver Art Museum

You don’t even have to step inside the Denver Art Museum to discover its artistic richness. Its exterior, designed by the Italian architect Gio Ponti, is as impressive as the artwork inside and it will take your breath away with its reflective glass tiles and unusual shape.

Cash Register Building

One of the symbols of Denver, this spectacular skyscraper is impossible to miss and it’s one of the shiniest stars of the city’s skyline. It’s also known as the Wells Fargo Center, but it owes its popular nickname to the unusual curvy shape of its top floors that resemble a vintage cash register.

Denver Botanic Gardens

Denver Botanic Gardens are one of the best places to explore Denver’s natural beauty, but that’s not the only reason why tourists can’t resist them. They’ll also wow you with their architectural beauty, especially the Science Pyramid made with dark grey tiles.

The year that’s almost behind us has definitely been crazy, but we can’t deny it also brought us some good things. Among them are these three incredible buildings that show the latest trends in architecture and we really, really love them.

Jiunvfeng Study on Mount Tai (China)

Jiunvfeng Study was carefully designed to fit into the sacred space that surrounds it. It’s shaped like a cloud and sits on the lowest peak of Mount Tai. The building’s design makes it easy to forget you’re sitting in a modern building, because it respects and works with nature around it.

Museum of Contemporary Art Helga de Alvear (Spain)

The Helga de Alevar Foundation headquarters is located in the city of Cáceres, Spain. The building is not new; it was first built in 1913—and it was now restored and extended to match the surroundings in the most beautiful way.

Cycle Through the Trees in Bosland (Belgium)

There’s a new cycling path in Bosland, Belgium that offers a unique chance to cycle through the trees. The path is perfectly comfortable for cyclers of all ages, and it goes in a circle, which means you have an opportunity to ride and enjoy the view for as long as you want.
