]]>For some people, namely those from the United States, South Korea, or Malaysia, traveling to North Korea is, indeed, forbidden. So don’t put too much effort into getting there if this applies to you.
If you’re not from one of the countries listed above, the only way you’ll be allowed to travel to North Korea is through a tour operator that has been registered with and approved by the North Korean government. You won’t be able to go alone.
The only transport connections regularly going to North Korea are from China and Russia. The best way to get there is to take an AirKoryo flight from Beijing, although trains from Beijing are another, more affordable option. Most group tours include transportation, including both flights and train rides.
There are also sometimes flights offered from Thailand and Malaysia, but these are less reliable.

]]>Author James Scullin visited many hotels around the city and talked with the locals who work there to get material for the book. He was accompanied by photographer Nicole Reed, whose photos capture the essence of what Scullin was trying to tell us.
Scullin first visited North Korea with an approved tour group. He wanted to go back so much he started volunteering as a tour guide for similar trips and over time got to know the city of Pyongyang pretty well. Hotels fascinated him the most, because they are the only way the country uses to show local culture to travelers.

]]>According to the North Korean propaganda, the leader Kim Jong-il was born near the lake on the mountain, and the news agencies reported that on the day he died, the ice on the lake cracked so loud, that it seem to shake the heavens and the Earth.
One of the most interesting things, except for nature’s astonishing, beauty is the stone, which suggests one side is China, and the other North Korea. This is the maybe a once in a lifetime chance to step into North Korea.
The entire region is made of basaltic lava flows, which is the indicator of nature’s greatness and power. The lake in winter and in early spring is frozen and covered in snow. However, regardless to seasons, the sight is heavenly beautiful anytime.
Due to its popularity, there are tourists from all over the world, mainly from China and North Korea, so waiting in queue is totally normal and expected.
