When many travelers visit Japan, the food they most look forward to eating is sushi, but the country is actually home to a diverse culinary landscape that extends well beyond salmon skin rolls. Japanese street food, in particular, stands out as a delicious example of its rich and diverse gastronomic heritage, offering travelers a peek into an authentic, yet often overlooked facet of local culture through cuisine. If you’re planning a visit to Japan anytime soon, read on to learn more about some of the best street food dishes worth trying.

Takoyaki

Not to be confused with teriyaki, which is a type of sauce, takoyaki are spherical dumplings filled with pieces of octopus meat. Literally translated as “grilled octopus,” the dumplings consist of a batter made from wheat flour and miso broth, and have a crispy exterior with a chewy inside. They’re traditionally served with Japanese mayonnaise and a Worcestershire-based takoyaki sauce, with a sprinkle of bonito flakes and spring onion for garnish.

Okonomiyaki

Originating from both Hiroshima and Osaka, okonomiyaki is a savory pancake with a soft, yet dense texture made from a wheat batter mixed with cabbage. They’re widely regarded as quite customizable and can be prepared with a variety of toppings ranging from meat and seafood to fried udon noodles. In Osaka, the ingredients are usually mixed to create a frittata-like pancake, while in Hiroshima, they’re layered a bit like a pizza.

Taiyaki

When you’ve had your fill of savory pancakes and actual fish, be sure to try taiyaki, a popular fish-shaped pastry for dessert. Taiyaki are typically filled with sweet fillings such as red bean paste, custard, or chocolate, and have a unique texture that strikes a satisfying balance between crispy and chewy. Vendors are easy to find around tourist attractions, making taiyaki a convenient option for travelers on the go.

A trip to Japan is incomplete if you don’t take some time to visit Osaka, especially if you happen to be a fan of modern architecture. You’ll stumble upon many innovative architectural gems while roaming the streets of this city, and here are three that will knock you off your feet.

Umeda Sky Building

One of Osaka’s biggest architectural landmarks, Umada consists of two sky-high buildings and a wide atrium-like space that connects them. Its exterior is impressive in its own right, but the real magic starts when you reach its rooftop observatory, where you’ll get to see Osaka from a height of 170 meters.

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

If you happen to be a huge fan of public aquariums, you’ll be happy to hear that Osaka is home to the largest one in the entire world. It’s instantly recognizable thanks to its futuristic building, best known for its colorful and whimsical design.

The National Museum of Art

The impressive exterior of Osaka’s National Museum of Art is a great interlude to everything that awaits inside. The building, designed by Cesar Pelli, is a work of art in itself, and it’s impossible to miss because it resembles a giant bird made out of stainless steel.

If your list for a trip to Osaka contains the spring cherry blossom or Koyo in the fall, that’s great! But even if not, it’s not a big deal.

The best time to be in Osaka does not depend on the seasons. It’s really easy to find what to do in Osaka even in winter and summer!

https://www.instagram.com/p/CFZeNabHji5/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Located about an hour by train from the magical city of Kyoto, Osaka is the Las Vegas of Japan. The city is industrial and dirty relative to other cities in Japan, but it has its charm and, of course, great food.

Spring and summer are great seasons to visit in Osaka, with the cherry blossoms at its peak, followed by summer and the park season. Summer is a great time for walking through the markets of the city and enjoying the great food they offer.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CFZcb8LJkd2/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Fall and winter are great for watching the Koyo (leaf change), and visiting the city’s hottest attractions—like the hot baths, karaoke clubs, and its unique hotels. The city does not see a lot of snowfall, so you can walk the streets in all seasons, and even at the height of winter.
