Bucharest is home to many amazing attractions that will keep you occupied, but what if you just need a peaceful place to relax after a long day of sightseeing? The stunning parks of the Romanian capital will welcome you with open arms, and here are three worth checking out.

Herastrau Park

Officially known as King Michael I Park, this park borrows its famous nickname from the stunning Herastrau Lake that surrounds it. It’s the largest park that Bucharest has in store, and you’ll find a wide range of amazing attractions on its grounds, including the immersive Village Museum.

Carol Park

Named after King Carol I of Romania, this park is so impressive that it’s been listed as a historical monument about two decades ago. Part of the reason why it received this honor is its show-stopping Mausoleum monument, but its French gardens and a tiny lake on its premises aren’t too shabby either.

Tineretulu Park

Located in close proximity to the previous park, Tineretulu is just as impressive. In addition to being home to many green areas, playgrounds, and a lake with a tiny island at its center, this park also happens to be home to the large sporting and concert arena the Sala Polivalentă.

Whether you live in a particular country or are just passing through, there are certain experiences that are universally enjoyable, and one of our favorites is discovering a great bookstore. There are some bookstores that are so much more than just vendors of literature; they’re architectural marvels comparable to some of the world’s most magnificent churches and skyscrapers. If you consider yourself a bibliophile, read on to learn more about three beautiful bookstores that will ignite your imagination.

El Ateneo Grand Splendid, Argentina

This enchanting store in the heart of Buenos Aires is housed in a former theater still decorated with the ornate frescoes, velvet curtains, and golden balconies of its past life. Readers can immerse themselves in a novel or nonfiction work while sitting in the theater’s plush red seats to feel like they’re part of a literary performance.

Livraria Lello, Portugal

The Livrario Lello bookstore Porto, Portugal, is one of the oldest in the world and widely considered to be a neo-gothic masterpiece. The shop boasts a striking spiral staircase that ascends to meet an stained glass ceiling and intricately carved wooden shelves carrying books of all genres. Author J.K. Rowling has even shared that drew inspiration for the Harry Potter series from Livraria Lello while living in Porto.

Cărturești Carusel, Romania

Cărturești Carusel is a cozy, yet whimsical bookstore in the center of Bucharest, Romania. The shop is a treasure trove of books, gifts, and art set in a historic 19th-century building. Romania is widely known as Dracula’s birth country, and it will win you over with its Gothic architecture. Enchanting castles are scattered all around it, and these three will take you centuries into the past and make you appreciate Romania’s rich history, culture, and architectural beauty even more.

Bran Castle

Commonly known as Dracula’s Castle, this charming castle in the heart of Transylvania is one of its main landmarks. Horror fans can’t resist visiting this top attraction while in Romania, but it’s important to note that its connection to Bram Stoker’s Dracula is purely fictional and that the castle from this beloved novel barely resembles this one.

Peleș Castle

Peleș Castle is one of Transylvania’s masterpieces of Neo-Renaissance architecture, and you shouldn’t miss it for the world while exploring this region. Initially built for King Carol I of Romania, this castle is equally impressive inside and out and you should definitely explore its museum of national heritage during your visit.

Corvin Castle

Corvin Castle is one of the seven wonders of Romania – and for a good reason! This Gothic-Renaissance castle in Hunedoara is one of the largest and most stunning in all of Europe, and it will win you over with its imposing towers and gorgeous courtyards.

If you have an opportunity to visit Romania, you should take it. The country has some of the most diverse landscapes in Europe and an abundance of charming cities that you will enjoy exploring. But before you head there, there are some things you should know.

Romania Doesn’t Use Euro

Despite being in European Union, Romania still hasn’t adopted Euro as its currency. This means that you will have to exchange your cash for Romanian Leu. Luckily, there are plenty of credible exchanges, and credit cards are widely accepted.

U.S. Citizens Don’t Need Visa

You won’t need a visa to enter Romania as a U.S. citizen. However, expect your passport to be checked upon entry because Romania is yet to be part of the Schengen Zone. Your passport will also have to be valid for at least three months after the date you plan to leave the country.

Romania is Surprisingly Affordable

Romania is one of the most affordable destinations in Europe. You can expect to spend a lot less on accommodation and food than you would in countries like Italy, France, and Germany.

Tipping is Common

Tipping is not customary in most European countries. However, in Romania, you are expected to tip your waiters, hotel staff, and even taxi drivers.

Summer is Best Time to Visit

Romania is one of those destinations that offer plenty of activities at any time of the year. With that being said, most tourists tend to visit in late spring and summer because there is less chance of rain, and the weather is perfect for exploring the country’s natural beauties.

Watching the leaves change is a popular pastime in the United States that people will often travel great distances to enjoy. Some make an annual trip of visiting New England for the foliage, as many states in the region offer some of the best views in the country. For those who live in other parts of the world or anyone in search of a little autumn getaway, Europe is full of forests that make for ideal foliage viewing once the weather turns cool and the leaves start to change. Here are the spots we love most.

Transylvania, Romania

The Carpathian Mountains that run through the Transylvania region of Romania make for some truly spectacular foliage viewing around early to mid-October. We recommend staying in the city of Brasov, visiting Bran “Dracula’s” Castle, and driving along Transfagarasan road for some of the best sites.

Hrensko, Czech Republic

Hrensko is the ultimate destination for anyone in search of some peace and quiet or people with a strong disdain for crowds. The village has less than 300 inhabitants but is home to several beautiful hiking trails that are perfect for enjoying the changing leaves.

Paris, France

You don’t have to venture into the countryside to see the leaves change – the city of Paris has plenty of fantastic places to sit and watch the foliage. What could be better than soaking in a view like this over a chocolate croissant and cafe au lait?

London, Paris, Rome—while these are all amazing cities and we’d certainly never want to discourage travelers from enjoying everything that they have to offer, they can also be quite crowded. Their popularity as tourist destinations can make affordable accommodation hard to find and everyday purchases may be more expensive than they would be elsewhere. If you’re dying to see the Eiffel Tower or the Colosseum, by all means, book a flight, but if you’re just looking to get away and are open to exploring some lesser-known spots, why not check out one of these cities in Europe?

Hallstatt, Austria

This Austrian village is most famous for its production of salt, but it’s really worth visiting for the nature and views. Go for a hike in the Echern Valley Glacier Garden or go for a swim in Lake Hallstatt in the summer.

Zadar, Croatia

We think Croatia as a travel destination, in general, is underrated, but its smaller cities are definitely deserving of some love. We especially love Zadar, a historic town on the Dalmatian coast that’s well-known for its buildings and close proximity to national parks.

Brasov, Romania

Enjoy views of the Carpathian mountains and authentic Romanian culture in this small city located 2.5 hours outside the capital of Bucharest. Brasov is full of historic buildings and not far from Dracula’s castle in Bran.

Architecture lovers will feel right at home in Bucharest because beautiful buildings are scattered all around it. The Romanian capital will wow you even more if you happen to be a fan of neoclassical architecture because some of the city’s most popular landmarks were built in this style.

Romanian Athenaeum

One of the best examples of neoclassical architecture in the Romanian capital, the Romanian Athenaeum opened its doors in 1888 and it’s Bucharest’s main concert hall. The circular building is impossible to miss thanks to its ornate dome, and its walls were painted using the alfresco technique.

Palace of the Parliament

The Palace of the Parliament has only been around since 1997, but it was also built in modernist neoclassical style, with the elements of socialist realism. The colossal building covers 365,000 square meters, and it ranks as the heaviest and the most expensive administrative building in the world due to its massive size.

Arcul de Triumf

Triumphal arches are scattered all around Europe, from Paris to Barcelona, and Bucharest is one of the major cities with its own. Arcul de Triumf was completed in 1936 in memory of WWI troops, and it comes with internal stairs that offer amazing city views.

From art and history to military and village life, Bucharest has museums dedicated to pretty much every topic that you can possibly think of. If you’re a passionate museum dweller visiting the Romanian capital, here are three amazing museums that you should check out first.

The Village Museum

If a visit to an open-air museum happens to be your idea of fun, it doesn’t get much better than Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum. Located in the heart of King Michael I Park, this ethnographic museum explores Romanian village life and you can find hundreds of authentic peasant farms and houses on its grounds.

The National Museum of Art of Romania

Bucharest is home to numerous art museums and galleries, but it doesn’t get much better than this one. The National Museum of Art of Romania is located inside the Royal Palace, and it’s home to an extensive collection of medieval and modern Romanian art. An international collection assembled by the Romanian royal family is also on display at this museum.

Antipa Museum

If you can’t resist checking out natural history museums in every city you visit, Antipa will be your cup of tea. With two million specimens, it’s one of the best natural history museums in this part of the world, and its collection famously features the Black Sea and Atlantic wildlife dioramas and a humpback whale skeleton.
