Because of a Saint who lived during the 3rd century, February has come to be known as the month of love. As commercialized as you may believe the holiday to be, everyone likes getting chocolate and flowers now and again. In some parts of the world, Valentine’s Day is a massive celebration, while others tend to celebrate love a little differently.

The Philippines

As legend goes, the Roman emperor, Claudius II, forbid young soldiers to marry in the 3rd century as he believed single men made better soldiers. It was Saint Valentine who then secretly married them to their lovers. In this vein, the Filipino government sponsors a gala event every Valentine’s Day during which young couples get wed.

South Korea

No one does Valentine’s Day quite like South Korea. It is traditional for women to give men chocolates on February 14, while men give women non-chocolate candy a month later on March 14, known as White Day. Those who didn’t receive anything on either occasion then “celebrate” Black Day by eating black noodles on April 14 to lament their singleness.

Ireland

Haven’t found the one yet? Those seeking true love make a pilgrimage to the Shrine of St. Valentine in Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church in Dublin where one can find the relic of Saint Valentine of Rome. Hopeful pilgrims pray at the shrine and write a prayer request for love in a special book.

Like it or not, some passports are more powerful than others. When it comes to jet-setting around the world, your passport is your most important possession. You can misplace your sunglasses, your cell phone, and even your luggage, but do not misplace that travel document.

There are 227 countries included in the 2023 Henley Passport Index, and those who have a Japanese passport are able to visit 193 of them without a visa. It is for this reason that Japan has claimed the most powerful passport for the fifth year in a row.

Coming in joint second place, with just one country less, are South Korea and Singapore. Germany and Spain both claim third place with 190 destinations, followed by Italy; Finland; and Luxembourg with 189. The ranking means that Singapore has dropped one place as it held joint first in 2022, while the US sits at number 7.

“The Henley Passport Index measures visa-free access to 227 destinations across the world, which of course makes it an extremely useful tool for travelers,” stated Chairman of Henley & Partners, Dr. Christian H. Kaelin. “However, for global citizens and international businesspeople, a better measure of economic mobility and opportunity afforded by their passports is an indication of what share of the world’s GDP is accessible to them visa-free.”

While Japan flies high at the top of the index, Afghanistan is once again firmly at the bottom with only 27 countries accessible sans visa.

Seoul and Busan are the first cities that come to mind when someone mentions South Korea, but they’re not the only ones in this country worth visiting. Daejeon is one of its most underrated cities, and here are three reasons why you should put it on your bucket list.

Stunning Nature

Daejeon is worth the visit for its natural beauty alone. Surrounded by forested hills and the Geum River, this city and its surroundings are home to countless mountains, hot springs, and rivers freely open to the public. Passionate hikers shouldn’t miss the mountains Gyeryongsan and Daedunsan, while those who want to stick in the city should explore Hanbat Arboretum and Daejeon’s many amazing parks.

Amazing Museums

If you’re in the mood to explore the city’s art and culture, Daejeon’s museums are a good place to start. Daejeon Museum of Art and Lee Ungno Museum are popular with art lovers, but you should also consider checking out National Science Museum.

Modern Architecture

Daejeon is one of those cities that offers an amazing mix of old and new, and its modern architecture stands in stark contrast with its natural beauty. Stunning contemporary buildings and high-rises are scattered all around it, but Expo Bridge remains Daejeon’s biggest marvel of modern architecture.

Korea’s history dates back thousands of years, which makes South Korea a great place to visit if you enjoy cultural and world history. If you’ve been thinking of traveling to South Korea, there are lots of awesome cultural and modern spots to visit. But for those who want to learn a little about the past, here are three historical spots to visit around the country

Bukchon Hanok Village

Located in northern Seoul, this historic village will give you a taste of Korea 600 years ago during the Joseon Dynasty. This was the residence of nobles and royalty when it was built and today it’s still a residential area! It’s a beautiful area to wander with cafes and a view of the modern city across the way.

Gongsanseong Fortress

Now an archaeological site, this fortress used the surrounding mountains and cliffs for defensive cover. It housed the royal palace of the Baekje Kingdom in the 400s-500s BC. You can still see the walls of the fortress and the site of the palace among other elements that have been dug up by historians.

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

On the coast of Busan, this temple has sat since 1376. It houses several famous Buddhist artifacts including statues and shrines, unique historic architecture, and 108 steps that can be taken right down to the shoreline.

Most people visiting Busan are there to explore its amazing beaches, but there’s more to this South Korean city than meets the eye. There are many beautiful bridges in Busan spanning the Nakdong River, and here are three that will make you fall in love with this city.

Gwangan Bridge

One of the symbols of modern Busan, Gwangandaegyo AKA Diamond Bridge is the second-longest bridge in South Korea. This suspension bridge offers amazing views, and if you’re lucky enough to be in Busan at the right time, you might even catch a seasonal light display that takes place here.

Busan Bridge

Busan Bridge connects the districts of Yeongdo and Jung, and it’s primarily used as an industrial road these days. It still has a special place in the heart of the locals, because it symbolizes the development and industrial revolution of the city.

Busan Harbor Bridge

Busan Harbor Bridge was officially opened in 2014 and it’s one of Busan’s wonders of modern architecture. This landmark cable-style bridge offers easy access to Busan Port, with amazing views of ships in the harbor and epic nighttime illuminations that make it worth exploring late at night.

Incheon is one of the biggest major South Korean cities near Seoul, and this alone makes it worth a visit. Beautiful public parks are one of the things that this bustling city is best known for, and here are three that offer a stunning green oasis in the middle of the concrete jungle.

Songdo Central Park

Inspired by New York City’s Central Park, Songo covers 101 acres in the heart of Incheon’s international business district. It offers a wide range of different attractions and activities, ranging from walking paths and modern sculptures to a man-made lake with water taxis.

Incheon Grand Park

Grand Park is one of the largest and most spectacular that Incheon has in store and it probably offers the most peaceful experience. In addition to the usual park facilities, you can also find a zoo and a botanical garden on its premises.

Freedom Park

If you enjoy beautifully landscaped parks with many tiny architectural marvels on their grounds, Freedom Park will be your cup of tea. Modern status and memorials are scattered all around it, and you’ll especially enjoy it if you visit it during cherry blossoms season.

Every country has its own preferences when it comes to coffee culture. While some countries in particular, like Italy and Brazil, are more famously regarded as having some of the best coffee in the world, other countries like South Korea are not to be overlooked. The capital city of Seoul in particular is full of unique cafes that serve some of the most delicious and high-quality coffee available.

943 Kings Cross

For the Harry Potter fan in all of us, South Korea may not be the first place you’d think to look for such a magical-themed coffee shop, but this cafe located right in the heart of Seoul is full of pleasantly whimsical touches. From “Dragon’s Blood” syrups to Wizard’s Chess-inspired decor, you’re sure to find something you’ll love at this 6-story shop straight out of Hogwarts. Espresso Patronum!

Sahara Cafe at Soongsil University

You won’t find much about this hidden gem on Google or social media. They have no website or Instagram page but are still a go-to for locals and students of Soongsil University where the cafe is located. Their selection is small but the quality is high, and with everything under 5000 won (about $4.50 USD) it’s a great option for any traveler on a budget.

Jamggodae

This cafe, offering three different roasts of coffee, is almost unanimously regarded as the best coffee in South Korea by travelers from all over the world (and the internet). Every cup is freshly brewed by the owner himself, and the environment is warm and friendly, filled with books and vintage posters. Bring your laptop or a good book and stay awhile with their famous Dutch Iced Coffee.

Flower lovers visiting South Korea shouldn’t miss Daegu Arboretum for the world. You’ll find thousands of species of plants on its premises, including trees, flowers, and medicinal herbs. Make sure to take your time while exploring it because the flower sculptures you’ll find here are truly a sight to behold.

This charming wilderness park covers several valleys and peaks of Apsan Mountain, safely tucked away south of Daegu. From cable car rides and hiking trails to Buddhist temples and an observatory, this park has something in store for everyone and it’s one of the most popular day-trip destinations to visit from Daegu.
