When you go on a beach vacation, you will probably see some people surfing. Maybe they’re pros, or you might even see groups of beginners go out and take lessons. Either way, surfing can seem like a really daunting activity that is only meant for people who are super athletic or have a deep love for the ocean. While this is a great sport for people who fit this description, it can also be a really great activity for those just looking for some fun on a beach vacation!

There are so many reasons to sign up for surfing lessons, but one of the greatest ones is to simply challenge yourself. When was the last time you tried something new that you knew you would be bad at in the beginning? If you’re like the rest of the world, it has probably been a while. Surfing is a great way to let yourself fail and get back up. You will build resilience, and when you finally stand up on that board, you will feel so much better because you truly worked hard to get there.

There’s also a calming aspect to sitting on a board waiting for the perfect wave. Even if you spend the whole lesson without success in standing up, you’ll walk away feeling proud of yourself for trying and rejuvenated from being in flow with the water.

Nazaré is a small coastal town north of Lisbon, known for being the site of some of the biggest waves in the world. With fantastic food, welcoming locals, and the surfing conditions of a lifetime, this is the ideal destination for any ocean lovers looking for an adventure.

Nazaré Canyon

The giant waves of Nazaré occur as a result of the Nazaré canyon. This underwater phenomenon is the largest underwater canyon in Europe, with a depth of 5,000 meters. The canyon increases and converges the incoming Atlantic ocean swell which, along with the local currents, dramatically enlarges wave heights.

Because of these monster waves, many big wave surf records have been broken in Nazaré, with pros surfing waves upwards of 80ft tall!

Surfing for All Levels

But don’t be put off by these intimidating heights if you’re more of an amateur surfer. While the Praia de Norte beach gets all the attention for giant waves, there are also areas with waves suitable for beginners and swimming spots for those who prefer to go board-free!

Traditional Fishing Community

While it is now known for surfing, Nazaré also remains a traditional fishing community. Be ready to eat fantastic fresh fish and seafood, and look out for women in traditional embroidered skirts hawking the day’s catch!

These are some that you might find worth checking out!

Surfing

Surfing is hugely popular in Hawaii thanks to the island chain’s privileged position in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Head to the island of Oahu for Hawaii’s best surfing beaches, but you can find plenty of places appropriate for both beginners and experts on any of the islands.

A good tip to visitors: throwing in a little bit of Spanish with the locals will make their smiles even bigger and they’ll probably even show you some of the hidden surf spots.

Best Time to Visit

Big barrel waves usually appear between March and mid-November. If you’re a serious surfer looking to catch proper waves – this is the best time for you. Load up on some tacos and carbs before surfing to make the most out of your days.

Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido is one of the most favored surf spots in Mexico. Even when the waves are small, they’re still fun enough to ride your board on. The waves that appear here come in different sizes and sometimes the barrels can last for a while. A long ride is always a good one – so make sure to put this location in your top three places to surf. You won’t be disappointed.

Hawaii is one of the gems of the Pacific Ocean, a collection of gorgeous islands that feature beaches and tropical weather and scenery.

Hawaiian BBQ

The most popular cuisine in Hawaii is known as Hawaiian BBQ, but it probably isn’t like any other barbecue that you are familiar with. On the islands, you will find restaurants that serve up dishes like fried spam, kalua pork, and macaroni salad which are the most popular Hawaiian foods.

Luau

If you are lucky enough to find one or to be invited to one, a Hawaiian party and feast known as a luau is just about as quintessential as it gets. Traditional dress, dancing, and singing are other integral parts of this experience which is best done as close to the beach as possible.

Central America’s top destination for surfing lovers is—without a doubt—the beautiful country of Costa Rica. The country’s numerous beaches are ideal for catching waves thanks to the fantastic conditions for big surf.

So, which beaches should you think about visiting if you’re looking to plan a surf trip to Costa Rica? Here are some of the top options.

Playa Tamarindo

Located on the country’s northern Pacific Coast, Tamarindo has plenty of fame as a great surf spot. Numerous surf schools and expert surfers can be found here taking advantage of the strong Pacific currents and the normally-pleasant weather in the area.

Playa Jaco

This 2.5 mile stretch of sand, located just west of the country’s capital of San Jose on the Pacific Coast, is a beautiful place to catch waves. The surf here isn’t as extreme as it is in other surf spots in the country, making it a great choice for beginners and novices.

Playa Cocles

Arguably the best surfing destination on the country’s Caribbean Coast is Playa Cocles, near the country’s border with Panama. Cocles’s warm water and moderate breaks are the perfect combination for a laid-back surfing trip.
