Tanzania is a great choice for any tourists that want to explore some of the stunning beauties Africa has to offer. Whether you are looking to relax on amazing beaches, meet exotic animals, climb imposing mountains, or simply explore vibrant cultures, this is the place to go. However, before you visit Tanzania, there are a few things you should know.

You Need a Visa

Foreign visitors need a visa to enter Tanzania. Luckily, U.S. citizens can complete the visa process online and get approval before embarking on the trip. The e-visa comes with a cost of around $100.

You Will Need to Be Cautious When Traveling to Some Regions

Tanzania is generally safe, especially when it comes to areas popular with tourists where there is an increased presence of military and police. However, according to the US Bureau of Consular Affairs, there are some regions like the Mtwara Region that you should avoid due to the threat of terrorist attacks. Also, the bureau recommends increased caution due to common crimes like mugging, carjacking, and petty theft.

Be Aware of Local Customs

Showing affection in public and touching a person of the opposite gender is an unwelcome sight in Tanzania, especially in crowded places. Also, the country is still quite conservative, so both men and women are expected to be dressed modestly.

Avoid Tap Water

Tap water in Tanzania is not for drinking and it is even recommended you avoid brushing your teeth with it. Instead, use bottled water that is readily available and affordable.

Have Some Cash on You at All Times

You can get by with your credit card for the better part of your journey, but having some cash on you will get you a long way. The official currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS) with the U.S. dollar also being accepted for some products and services.

Tanzania is best known as one of the world’s leading safari destinations and its natural beauty knows no bounds, but wildlife spotting isn’t the only thrilling experience it has in store. You can also check out several dormant and active volcanoes during your visit to this African country, and these three are a good place to start.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is Tanzania’s No. 1 tourist attraction, but did you know this mountain is actually a dormant volcano? Africa’s highest mountain is home to three volcanic cones—Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira—but only the first one is dormant and it could erupt again.

Ol Doinyo Lengai

If visiting dormant volcanoes isn’t exhilarating enough for you, you should put Ol Doinyo Lengai on your bucket list. Also known as the Mountain of God, this is one of Tanzania’s most active volcanoes known for producing natrocarbonatite lava flow, and only the bravest of hikers are up to the challenge of ascending to its top.

Mount Meru

Not to be confused with the mythical Mount Meru, this dormant stratovolcano is an actual place located west of Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s home to one of Africa’s highest mountain peaks at 4,562 meters and it’s a popular destination with hikers and climbers.

Beautiful national parks can be found in pretty much every African country, and Tanzania is no different. Tarangire National Park is one of Africa’s best attractions of this kind, and here are three reasons why you should pay it a visit.

Rich Flora

One of the things that the Tarangire National Park is best known for is the large number of baobab trees on its grounds. Its river valley and marshy areas make it a perfect backdrop for acacia woods and combretum woods, making its landscape even more stunning.

Beautiful Landscapes

There’s more to Tarangire’s landscape than swamps and river valleys. Its granitic ridges with the breathtaking views of the African savannah and the surrounding mountains make it worth the visit, but the real magic starts when you join a safari taking you to its heart.

Diverse Wildlife

The main reason to visit Tarangire National Park while in Tanzania is its diverse wildlife. It’s well-known for being home to large herds of elephants, but lions, leopards, zebras, and wildebeest can also be found on its grounds. Tarangire is heaven on Earth for birdwatchers, with 550 species scattered around it, but it’s also famous for its termite mounds.

Unusual and lavish rentals are scattered all around Tanzania, but none of them compares to the Manta Resort. This lavish resort on Pemba Island is a true paradise and one thing that sets it apart from other luxurious rentals is its state-of-the-art underwater room.

Manta Resort’s underwater room features three floors, including the landing deck, roof with a lounging area, and the underwater room beneath the wooden deck. This unusual feature transformed this resort into a popular attraction with travelers with deep pockets because you have to set aside $1,840 per night, with a minimum three-night stay being allowed.

Manta’s official website described their signature underwater room as a place to submerge yourself in the Indian Ocean and “experience the fascinating shifting lights of the water, the ebb and flow of the tide and subject to the curiosity of the fishy inhabitants of another world.”

The underwater room put Manta on the map, but it’s not the only reason why travelers are ready to spend some major cash to stay at this resort. The seafront villas and garden rooms are just as spectacular, and Manta makes for a popular honeymoon destination thanks to a long list of fun and relaxing activities that you can enjoy at Pemba Island.

From Mount Kilimanjaro to several amazing natural parks with an abundance of wildlife, Tanzania is home to some of Africa’s biggest natural wonders. This country wouldn’t be the same without its amazing lakes, and here are three that you shouldn’t miss for the world while exploring it.

Lake Victoria

Located on the border between Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya, Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest freshwater lake, and also the largest tropical lake in the entire world. It’s the principal source of water for the Nile River, and it’s known for rich native wildlife, with hundreds of species of fish found in its waters.

Lake Manyara

Safely tucked away in the heart of the Lake Manyara National Park, this shallow, alkaline lake is one of Tanzania’s finest. In addition to being a popular canoeing spot, the lake is well-known for being home to thousands of flamingos that flock on its shores during the wet season.

Lake Tanganyika

One of the African Great Lakes, Tanganyika is the world’s second-deepest lake and also the second-biggest by volume. The lake borders four countries, including Tanzania, Congo, Burundi, and Zambia, and it ultimately drains into the Congo River system. It comes with diverse wildlife, including Nile crocodiles and 250 species of cichlid fish.

Tanzania joins a long list of African countries best known for the boundless natural beauty that they have in store. Its national parks are the best place to start exploring its breathtaking natural wonders, and these three are a good place to start.

Kilimanjaro National Park

Mount Kilimanjaro doesn’t need a special introduction because it’s Africa’s highest mountain. It also happens to be Tanzania’s most popular tourist attraction, alongside the national parks it’s a part of, filled with countless species of wild animals, from elephants and buffalos to leopards.

Tarangire National Park

This national park shares its name with the Tarangire River that runs through it, which is an important source of freshwater for wild animals living here. It’s best known for the massive migration of wildebeest and zebras, and a high density of baobab trees and elephants on its grounds.

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti covers a large area of 5,700 square miles of savanna ground, and a visit to Tanzania is incomplete if you don’t check it out. Just like Tarangire, this park is known for the long-distance migration of wildebeest and zebra, but it’s also home to the largest population of lions on the African continent.

Most people visiting Zanzibar are there to simply sit back, relax, and soak up the sun, but there’s more to this beautiful archipelago than meets the eye. If you want to explore its colorful history and culture, here are a couple of day-trips you should consider taking during your visit.

Stone Town

Stone Town is the main tourist attraction in Zanzibar City, and its architecture represents the unusual mix of different cultures that occupied its shores over the centuries.

Spice Farms

Zanzibar is sometimes referred to as “Spice Islands” because it’s known as a major spice exporter. You can explore its many spice farms during your visit and bring some spices back home.

The Rock Restaurant

Located on Michamvi Pingwe Beach, this unusual restaurant became one of Zanzibar’s most picturesque attractions thanks to its unique position on a rock in the middle of the ocean.

Prison Island

Changuu aka Prison Island once served as a prison for rebellious slaves, but it’s now a major tourist attraction thanks to the colony of giant tortoises that inhabit its shores.

Nakupenda Beach

Zanzibar is home to countless beautiful beaches, but Nakupenda is truly special since it consists of a long stretch of sand in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

Zanzibar has become one of the world’s most beloved beach destinations recently. This Tanzanian island in the Indian Ocean is famous for its pleasant, tropical weather and pristine stretches of sand that make it a top choice for vacationers. But when you finally get to Zanzibar, how do you know what the top beaches to spend time at are? This guide will help you pick the best of the best.

Nungwi Beach

Nungwi is the northernmost settlement on the island and the home of arguably its most stunning beach. This virgin stretch of white sand is the draw that attracts thousands of tourists a year to its ocean waters and resort hotels.

Paje Beach

Heading south and to the east coast of Zanzibar, you will find Paje Beach. This spot has a laid-back vibe and features some of the most stunning turquoise water you will find in the area. Kitesurfing is popular here, but it is also a great place to just kick your feet up.

Pingwe

Pingwe is located on a small peninsula that juts out from the island on the east coast, and is the home of a number of smaller beaches and resorts. Here, you will be able to disconnect from everything and let the magic of the island consume you.

Running the length of Zambia and Tanzania are the rail tracks that Tazara Railway follows. This unique railway connects Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania and Kapiri Mposhi, Zambia. If you’ve dreamed of seeing Southern Africa by rail, then this is the trip you have to take.

Good to Know

You can choose to start in Zambia or Tanzania, but most travelers prefer to finish in Dar Es Salaam, where you can then take a ferry or flight to Zanzibar for some beach time.

The train does not operate daily but instead operates twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays. Don’t rely on the timetable, though, because this train often runs late. You can expect to spend anywhere from two to four days on the train if you travel from start to finish without jumping off.

There are also different classes, which offer various levels of comfort. If you’re planning to do this trip, be aware that there is no air conditioning and you should bring some food with you.

While it may not be the most comfortable of rides, it does give travelers a unique look into the geography of the region. You will see the ocean, grasslands, and if you’re really lucky, some elephants roaming in the distance.

Do you want to live on the edge? The correct question would be – do you want to travel on the edge? Today we give you some unusual destinations, which may be a bit dangerous but will satisfy the daredevil within you.

Danakil Desert, Eritrea

Boiling temperatures of nearly 50°C, numerous active volcanoes and toxic gases. It’s hard to imagine an environment as brutal as the Danakil Desert in Africa. Many people call this place “Hell on Earth,” but it still attracts brave adventurers. Visiting this wilderness without an experienced guide is strictly forbidden.

Snake Island, Brazil

Hidden off the coast of Brazil, the island is home to the world’s most venomous snakes. Herpetologists say that there are 5 snakes per square meter on average. The Brazilian government has banned access to the island after several deaths were reported.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BbtQWKCnqGp/?hl=en

Lake Natron, Tanzania

This lake may look like it belongs to some other planet, but this is actually Lake Natron in Tanzania. The alkaline salt on the lake’s surface is so toxic that any living creature that comes in contact with it will die. For obvious reasons, swimming in this lake is strictly forbidden and the horrible smell of hydrogen sulfide will not allow you to enjoy the beautiful scenery anyway.
