Foreign visitors need a visa to enter Tanzania. Luckily, U.S. citizens can complete the visa process online and get approval before embarking on the trip. The e-visa comes with a cost of around $100.
You Will Need to Be Cautious When Traveling to Some Regions
Tanzania is generally safe, especially when it comes to areas popular with tourists where there is an increased presence of military and police. However, according to the US Bureau of Consular Affairs, there are some regions like the Mtwara Region that you should avoid due to the threat of terrorist attacks. Also, the bureau recommends increased caution due to common crimes like mugging, carjacking, and petty theft.
Be Aware of Local Customs
Showing affection in public and touching a person of the opposite gender is an unwelcome sight in Tanzania, especially in crowded places. Also, the country is still quite conservative, so both men and women are expected to be dressed modestly.
Avoid Tap Water
Tap water in Tanzania is not for drinking and it is even recommended you avoid brushing your teeth with it. Instead, use bottled water that is readily available and affordable.
Have Some Cash on You at All Times
You can get by with your credit card for the better part of your journey, but having some cash on you will get you a long way. The official currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS) with the U.S. dollar also being accepted for some products and services.

You can choose to start in Zambia or Tanzania, but most travelers prefer to finish in Dar Es Salaam, where you can then take a ferry or flight to Zanzibar for some beach time.
The train does not operate daily but instead operates twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays. Don’t rely on the timetable, though, because this train often runs late. You can expect to spend anywhere from two to four days on the train if you travel from start to finish without jumping off.
There are also different classes, which offer various levels of comfort. If you’re planning to do this trip, be aware that there is no air conditioning and you should bring some food with you.
While it may not be the most comfortable of rides, it does give travelers a unique look into the geography of the region. You will see the ocean, grasslands, and if you’re really lucky, some elephants roaming in the distance.

Lake Natron, Tanzania
This lake may look like it belongs to some other planet, but this is actually Lake Natron in Tanzania. The alkaline salt on the lake’s surface is so toxic that any living creature that comes in contact with it will die. For obvious reasons, swimming in this lake is strictly forbidden and the horrible smell of hydrogen sulfide will not allow you to enjoy the beautiful scenery anyway.
