Trains seem to get a bad rap. Sometimes there’s a good reason for the negative reviews, because a cramped train ride that feels hot and stuffy is never fun. However, there’s a whole other positive version of what riding a train could be. It’s not just a means to get from point A to point B; it’s a delightful adventure in itself. Let’s dive into the awesome benefits of train travel and why it’s an experience you don’t want to miss.

Natural Beauty

Train journeys offer unparalleled scenic beauty. As you glide along the tracks, you’ll be treated to breathtaking landscapes, picturesque countryside, and awe-inspiring vistas. Whether it’s the rolling hills, shimmering lakes, or majestic mountains, the view from the train window is a feast for the eyes.

Time To Chill

Another perk of train travel is the opportunity to relax and unwind. Unlike airplanes or cars, trains provide ample legroom, comfortable seating, and the freedom to move around. You can stretch your legs, stroll to the dining car for a delicious meal, or simply find a cozy spot to curl up with a book.

Social Connection

Moreover, train travel fosters a sense of community and connection. You might strike up a conversation with a fellow traveler, exchange stories, or even make new friends. It’s a refreshing change from the impersonal nature of other modes of transportation.

If you ask us, train travel is underrated. Except in Japan, that is. The East Asian country has realized how smooth, comfortable, and quick tour journey can be by taking the train. Japan takes great pride in its railway system, going so far as to decorate the exterior of the trains in some of the country’s most famous characters.

Pokémon with You

We have Japan to thank for giving us Pokèmon. Run by the East Japan Railway Company, the train is as yellow as Pikachu and features his little face. The Pokémon with You train was created to make the people of Tohoku smile, following the earthquake and tsunami which devastated the region in 2011.

Hello Kitty

Most girls had at least something from Hello Kitty while growing up. The sweet cat was first created in 1974, and the brand is now worth $89 billion. Even though Hello Kitty’s backstory involves her living in London, the Japanese proudly claim the character and have put her on their Shinkansen bullet train.

Anpanman

Imagine basing an entire series on sweet Japanese filled rolls. Anpanman was inspired by the traditional treats and has been around since 1973. What began as a picture book is now an anime series which has featured 1,768 characters over the years.

With so much travel content focused on exotic locales and picture-perfect destinations, it’s easy to forget that sometimes the best parts of travel can be found in the in-between moments. Europe, in particular, is home to a number of train journeys that offer views of some truly spectacular landscapes unlike anything you’ll find in the continent’s major cities.

If you’ve got the time, traveling by train is also a great way to save money without sacrificing much comfort. Here are a few European train journeys we especially recommend.

Glacier Express

The Glacier Express links two of Switzerland’s most popular ski spots and takes passengers through a winding route of snow-covered peaks, valleys, and wild alpine forests. Reserve a window seat, order a glass of  Valais wine and enjoy watching the country’s natural beauty go by.

Venice Simplon Orient Express

Go back in time and travel through Europe in style aboard the recently resurrected Orient Express. Journeys are available between major cities all over the continent, so exactly what sites and sounds you can expect will vary depending on which route you choose.

West Highland Line

A journey through Scotland on the West Highland Line is what we’d imagine being inside a postcard would feel like. Expect beautiful views of the Highlands, lochs, and moors along a historic train route peppered with the ruins of historic castles.

If you want your trip to be as comfortable as it gets, picking the right type of transportation makes all the difference. Trains sometimes get a bad rap for being too slow, but they’re actually the most comfortable means of transportation for more reasons than one.

Leg Room

One of the biggest issues with car, bus, and plane rides—especially when you’re flying with a low-budget airline—is the lack of legroom. You won’t have to deal with this problem when taking a train ride because you’ll have much more space at your disposal to stretch out and get cozy.

Relaxing Vibe

There’s something romantic about the idea of taking a train ride and that’s not a coincidence. From reading a book or watching a movie, to just sitting back and enjoying the amazing scenery, trains allow you to relax in a way no other means of transportation does.

No Nausea

Another great thing about traveling by train is that it’s less nausea-inducing than any other means of transpiration. One of the great things about it is that you won’t have to deal with constant speed changes and busy roads, so it’s easier to sit back, relax, and just enjoy the ride.

People may rarely use trains to travel in the United States, but in Europe, they are one of the most popular forms of transportation among locals. If you are visiting the continent anytime soon, you might want to follow their lead and pick trains instead of cars, busses, and planes. Here is why.

It’s Convenient

First of all, traveling by train in Europe is convenient. You don’t have to worry about security checks, the size of your luggage, or going through the complicated process of buying a ticket. Also, they are reliable and on time for departures and arrivals.

Trains Are Affordable and Comfortable

Train tickets are much more affordable than plane tickets in Europe. While they might not be as cheap as buses, you will get to enjoy a much more comfortable ride thanks to spacious seats and uninterrupted travel.

Trains Will Get You Faster to Your Destination

You can travel faster by train than any other land transportation. The trains usually average around 125 mph, but some high-speed lines reach speeds of 155 mph.

You Will Get to Enjoy Beautiful Views

Most railways go through the countryside, allowing you to enjoy some fantastic views that you would have a hard time experiencing some other way.

Expansive Railway Network

Whether you are looking to travel through a particular country or from one country to another, you can do it by train. Europe has an expansive railway network, and all the continent’s major cities are part of it.

Pinterest has always done a great job of predicting upcoming travel trends, and they recently made their picks for 2023. According to the data collected by this photo-sharing platform, train travel will be going stronger than ever next year, as more travelers try to explore the world in a more sustainable way.

Gen Z and millennials are driving this trend, and it’s not a coincidence that they’re opting for this timeless mode of transportation. Trains won them over with a long list of perks from quicker boarding and extra legroom to scenic views.

A lower carbon footprint also had a role to play, and it’s most likely the main reason behind trains’ comeback in 2023. In the aftermath of the pandemic, people are trying to travel the world without having a huge ecological impact, and train travel seems like the best way to get it done.

“They’re choosing trains as their primary form of transportation – and boasting about it! – leading to a new term: ‘train bragging’. As countries add new train routes, introduce sleeper cars and make some journeys free, train travel seems to be just the ticket in 2023,” reads Pinterest’s press release.

Train trip aesthetic and train quotes emerged as the most searched terms concerning this trend, but Pinterest users also seem to have two specific destinations in mind—Europe and India.

Traveling long distances can get uncomfortable. Whether it’s by plane, train, or some other mode of transport, sitting with your legs cramped for hours on end can leave you less than happy by the time you reach your destination. It brings to light the age-old question: is it acceptable to recline your seat?

The debate is a hot topic—mostly dependent on whether you are the recliner, or the one being reclined on. But as a train commuter in China discovered the hard way, it may not be the best idea…

While traveling through Wuhan province, a university student had been using his recently-purchased laptop on the tray table provided on the seat in front of him. At one point, the man in front decided to recline his seat, breaking the computer screen.

Repairs for the laptop came to the equivalent of $685. The student decided to sue his fellow passenger for damages, with the matter being taken to the Xiangyin County People’s Court in Hunan.

According to the ruling, both men were at fault. The man in front (Mr. Liu) was assigned 70% of the blame for reclining his seat, but the student (Mr. Wang) was considered 30% responsible as he should have been more careful. Liu was thus ordered to pay 70% ($478) of the amount that he was being sued for.

France is aiming to cut down on its carbon footprint in a big way, and it will drastically change how travelers get around the European country.

Although France isn’t particularly large, it’s a sizeable enough country that it has the option of getting to certain areas via a domestic flight. Until now, that is. In a bid to cut down C02 emissions, the French government has decided to cancel domestic flights on routes where there is a train ride alternative.

The move, which was brought about at the Citizens’ Climate Convention, was approved by the European Commission on the condition that several direct, high-speed rail connections that are shorter than 2.5 hours are available. At present, high-speed lines exist between major cities like Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and Lille.

The new ban is set to affect the routes between Paris Orly Airport and Bordeaux, Nantes, and Lyon. In future, domestic flights between Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and Rennes and Lyon, as well as between Lyon and Marseille, could also be prohibited should rail services improve.

The air travel ban will be in effect for three years and reviewed after two.

Traveling by train is often one of the best options if you’re looking to make a short-to-medium-distance trip. Instead of dealing with the nuisance of airport security, the airplane boarding process, and the uncomfortable nature of plane travel, going by train can really make your life easier.

Here are some of the advantages that train travel offers to those who are making a journey.

The Landscapes

It’s definitely cool to see the land from up high while on a plane, but let’s be honest: it’s often cloudy and difficult to see anything of real importance. While traveling on a train, you can observe the landscape up close and personal, seeing how it transitions between different areas. It’s a show in and of itself!

The Bar

Bored of sitting in your seat? Well, you can get up and head to the train bar/dining car for a change of scenery and for something to snack on and drink! That’s certainly something you can’t do while driving somewhere. Many trains even have huge, panoramic windows in the bar areas.

The Ability to be Productive

It’s impossible to get anything done while driving because you’re, well, busy keeping the car on the road. While on a plane, you have to pay ridiculous Wi-Fi fees in order to stay connected. On a train, however, you can use mobile data or even free Wi-Fi in order to stay connected and be productive while traveling!
