2022 can be regarded as the year that travel returned. After two years in which borders were closed, flights were canceled, and loved ones were separated, travelers were eager to return to doing what they love most. Despite airfare rising more than 42% between September 2021 and September 2022, Americans were still keen to hop on planes and see the world—as well as their own country. Call it “revenge travel”, if you will.

As far as domestic travel goes, New York City was the most-booked destination, followed by Las Vegas and Orlando.

But even when travelers weren’t flying, those cities remained popular. The majority of road trips were taken to Orlando, Las Vegas, and Nashville, with Vegas proving to be the go-to place in spring; while Orlando won out during summer and fall.

Global borders re-opening, and many destinations no longer required a COVID test to enter, which saw a massive increase in people jet-setting abroad.

“As international destinations re-opened particularly in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, demand for trips across the pacific surged in the second half of 2022. We expect this to continue into 2023 as Tokyo, Ho Chi Minh City, and Bangkok are already ranking in the top trending destinations for travel,” noted Hayley Berg who is the lead economist at Hopper.

If travel is on your agenda this year, begin monitoring prices for your domestic flight 3-4 months in advance and 5-6 months for international flights to ensure you get the best deal.

Remote working experienced a huge boom in the past few years and led to the emergence of several travel trends in this sphere. “Hush” trips are one of those trends and they’ll be all the rage in 2023, but how do they work, and should you give them a try?

“Hush” trips made it to Forbes’ list of travel trends for 2023, together with responsible travel, luxury travel, and domestic traffic, among others. As digital nomadism and remote work became commonplace, this publication claims that some workers won’t even feel the need to inform their employees that they’re not working from their home country.

“For some individuals, full-on digital nomadism is too extreme. That’s precisely why “hush” trips have the potential to be the newest travel trend in 2023. Remote workers pack up and head somewhere new for a limited amount of time… without ever telling their employer,” writes Forbes.

“Hush” trips are basically a form of work-ation that doesn’t involve any communication with your place of employment. Instead of asking their bosses to hit the road and facing the risk of getting “no” for an answer, some remote workers are packing their bags without anyone’s approval.

As long as you have a strong Wi-Fi connection and you’re not spending the company dime, your boss probably won’t mind that you’re not working from home, but think twice before embarking on a “hush” trip if you have to go to the office from time to time.

From all-inclusive vacations to silent safaris, some of the biggest travel trends of 2022 don’t really come with a low price tag. Luckily, there are so many trends out there that it’s easy to find affordable options, and here are three you can try on a low budget.

Sustainable Travel

People are embracing an eco-friendlier approach to their travel plans in 2022, and this practice is good for both the planet and our bank accounts. The plane is generally the most expensive means of transportation, and people are discovering cheaper and more sustainable alternatives as they try to reduce their carbon footprint.

Spontaneous Bookings

Spontaneous trips were generally frowned upon by those traveling on a budget, but the pandemic changed that. Booking trips last minute is becoming more affordable because there’s no fear of getting your reservation or flight canceled, so you always know that you’re getting your money’s worth.

Staycations

Staycations have been going strong for two years now, and they’re not going anywhere. Some travelers still feel that it’s too risky to travel internationally, so they’re taking time to discover their home country instead, and saving a lot of money along the way.

2022 is just a few days away, and many passionate travelers are already dreaming about their next big adventure. If you’re looking for some inspiration for your next trip, check out Metro’s list of top travel trends that will be ruling the world next year.

Silent Safaris

Silent safaris ditch battery-powered 4x4s for quieter vehicles and they aim to be more eco-friendly than all the alternatives. They still allow you to see animals in close proximity, but they’ll be much calmer and more relaxed without intrusive noises.

Train Travel

Train travel has often been hailed as one of the most eco-friendly ways of travel, and it will be going stronger than ever in 2022. As more people try to reduce their carbon footprint, they’ll be ditching planes for trains, especially now that so many are operating through scenic routes.

Carbon Labeling

Carbon labeling is another eco-friendly travel trend that’s all about revealing the exact environmental footprint of each holiday, and some companies are already starting to embrace it.

Workations

As more people turned to work from home in the face of the global pandemic, workations became the new normal for many working professionals. They were the biggest travel trend of 2021, and their popularity isn’t fading away next year.

Are you the owner of a smartwatch? This techie accessory has become more and more popular to see on people’s wrists over the past few years, and it’s not hard to see why. Bringing all kinds of information on a small screen on your wrist, this tool can make things a lot easier when you’re on the go.

This smartwatch revolution has begun to spread to the realm of travel as well, and it offers all kinds of benefits to those of us who are adept at combining our love for technology with our passion for travel.

One of the advantages that smartwatches offer to travelers is the ability to load tickets and boarding passes to museums, shows, flights, and trains, just to name a few examples. By using one, you won’t have to deal with paper or your smartphone!

Apps such as Weather can also come in handy while traveling with your smartwatch. Do you see imposing clouds in the distance? Simply raise your smartwatch and check the radar or forecast to see when you need to duck inside!

Finally, another interesting tool that smartwatches offer that can be great for travelers is the ability to measure physical activity and rest. You can see how many steps and miles you have walked every day in order to ensure that you are getting enough exercise, and you can also set your smartphone to track your sleep so that you know that you’re rested and ready to go!

Consider using one of these useful devices on your next trip!

Travel has changed a lot over the past two years. Before the coronavirus pandemic, things were quite different than they are now in the travel industry. The trends are always changing, but it seems like they are more drastic than ever. Here’s what to expect when it comes to 2022 vacation trends.

Low Travel

Traveling “low,” in other words, using transport that’s low to the ground, is very popular. Unlike airplanes, trains, ferries, and cars are easier to physically distance from a lot of strangers. When you travel by ferry, you get to board your own car so you can ride to the destination.

Staycations

Staying at home and exploring nearby places is a great substitute for a traditional vacation. With people not knowing what to think about the pandemic anymore, staycations are more popular than ever. Those who do decide to leave the city will probably do it carefully, avoiding crowds.

3G Travel

Three-generation travel or 3G travel is a consequence of families being separated for a long time because of Covid. It won’t be rare to see children, parents, and grandparents all spending time together while discovering new places.

Slow Travel

Travel is definitely slowing down. Most people don’t rush from landmark to landmark but choose to explore and enjoy the maximum of each destination. Connecting with new places, taking everything in, and traveling meaningfully are the most important.

We’re all hoping that 2022 will be the year we go back to travel as much as before the pandemic. Things have certainly changed quite a bit in the world of travel, but it’s safe to say that trends will always exist. On that note, here are three travel trends you can expect to see in 2022.

Bleisure Travel

Bleisure is a word for a mix of business and leisure travel. With more people working remotely this category will definitely grow. Bleisure trips, also known as workcations, allow people to see new places and change the environment without taking days off or sacrificing their jobs. It’s a win-win!

Walking Holidays

More people took up running and walking over the past two years so walking holidays (with camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities) are growing in popularity. They allow us to connect with nature and explore it while moving our bodies and getting healthier every day.

Wellness Holidays

The good old wellness holidays are more in demand than ever. Everyone wants some self-care and self-love, and what better way to do that than to join a retreat or stay at a spa hotel for a while? There are many kinds of wellness packages that promise amazing results, and it’s only a matter of choosing which one you’ll use.

It’s no secret that TikTok is becoming many people’s go-to platform when looking for recommendations on any field, including travel. New research has revealed the top trending travel destinations on the video-sharing app, including the most-watched countries, cities, and attractions.

Top Countries

With over 461 million views, Japan was found to be the most-watched travel destination on TikTok. Many of the videos share etiquette tips for Western travelers and advice on when is the best time to enjoy the country’s famous cherry blossom season.

Travel videos on Russia come second, with much of the content centering on the country’s extremely cold winters. Mexico is the third most-watched country, and you should definitely check out this hashtag for the breathtaking beach videos.

Top Cities

Perhaps unsurprisingly, New York City is the most popular city on travel TikTok. Fittingly to one of the most visited cities in the world, many of the videos contain information on tourist traps to avoid, and lesser-known spots that are worth a visit. South Korea’s capital Seoul comes second in the cities category, followed by Dubai in third place.

Top Attractions

And what are the most talked about tourist attractions? The tallest building in the world Burj Khalifa takes the cake with an astounding 1.5 billion views!

Despite our planet and travel lives starting to lurch slowly towards normalcy after the past COVID-19 influenced year, one popular travel option and industry that has yet to get back on its feet and resume is the cruise industry. Very, very limited numbers of cruises were allowed to resume in Europe and some parts of Asia last year, but they have generally been shut down throughout the world since the pandemic began. But when might they come back?

Summer Cruisin’

With more and more people being vaccinated against the virus and countries starting to loosen restrictions, there have been talks about cruises resuming in some capacity this summer. Cruise lines including Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Crystal Cruises, four major players in both the North American and global cruise industry, have announced plans to bring back their voyages by July.

Requirements

By using ports in the Caribbean and in other places where there aren’t tight restrictions, passengers may be able to embark with proof of a negative COVID-19 test or vaccination. This would be a big relief to all of us who have missed cruising and visiting tropical destinations over the past year. Keep your eyes open to see if this positive development will indeed bring us back to cruises this summer!
