]]>Assuming you fly into Gutamala City, Antigua is about an hour drive from the airport on a good traffic day. We recommend booking a shuttle in advance for around $20 or a taxi. Be sure to stop at one of the several cafes for some of the tastiest coffees in the world as you overlook the mountainous views.
Stop in this museum and factory to learn about the history of cacao in Guatemala, the process of chocolate making and extraction from trees. Try your hand at a chocolate making class and eat your weight in artisan chocolates. This is a must for any trip to Gutamala.
Take a day hike from Antigua to this active volcano with a guided experience, and experience the heat of moltan lava up close. Make sure to bring some sticks and marshmallows for the ultimate campfire experience!
End your day in the street market where you will have the chance to sample Mayan cuisine and shop for art, textiles, and many other unique souvenirs to remember your trip by!

]]>Located deep inside the Virunga National Park, Mount Nyiragongo is one of Africa’s most notable active volcanoes with the largest known lava lake. It’s observed by a team of scientists due to its history of devastating eruptions, but that’s not stopping adrenaline-seekers from hiking in the area.
If hiking active volcanoes simply isn’t your thing, how about dormant ones? Located on the border between Congo and Rwanda, Mount Bisoke became a huge hit with nature lovers because it’s home to hiking trails, crater lakes, and a colony of mountain gorillas.
Many of the extinct volcanoes in Congo have a few things in common—they’re situated close to the Rwandan border and have mountain gorillas living on the slopes. That also happens to be the case with Mount Sabyinyo, one of the oldest dormant volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains.

]]>Arenal is set with its national park and there are several operators offering guided tours in the area. Anywhere in Costa Rica, you can book a one-day tour taking you to the hot springs, waterfalls and the remains of the 1968 eruption.
This mountain has mild to moderate explosive activity and lava flows, but it has entered a quiet period in 2015. The best route up the hill is from the village of Toya Bungkah.
This is the least-active volcano since it last erupted in 1888. It may not make headlines for its pyrotechnic, but magma is rising beneath the island, seismic activity has been increasing and the temperature of vent emissions is going up.
Etna dominates the city of Catania and eastern Sicily. Despite the constant volcanic activity, it is still possible to make it to Etna’s highest-allowable point of 2,920m and back in an afternoon.

]]>It erupted in the 1800s and has been known to produce massive flows of lava, but it hasn’t erupted since, so it’s still quite safe to visit it. Plus, the star-filled skies are definitely one of the highlights of this beautiful volcano. Still not convinced that this active volcano is worth visiting? Read on to hear more about it.
For the podcast The Habitat, a few handpicked scientists were left to live in a simulation of Mars environment for a whole year. Their Mars-like habitat was built at Mauna Loa. The podcast is an interesting listen and describes the conditions of the area and how the people felt there. It’s worth checking out too.
It’s worth flying from Honolulu to Hilo and then to South Kona for a great view of the volcano. There’s an observatory access road where you can watch the view from and you might be even able to witness the lava flowing from the volcano’s mouth with the backdrop of the sunset.
