If you’re used to travelling, then you’re probably all too familiar with how frustrating it can be to wait for your flight at the airport. Fortunately, by stopping at the right airport, you can get some rest and relaxation and perhaps even have some fun while you wait for your flight. Here are the most luxurious airports where you can be while you wait for your connecting flight.

Dubai International Airport

Are you someone who loves the idea of unwinding in a tranquil airport lounge? Well, with over 30 lounges, Dubai International Airport has more than enough options for you. When you’re not sipping cocktails on a comfortable sofa, you can peruse a wide variety of fashion boutiques as well as a champagne bar. What’s more, there’s also a five-star hotel for those in need of sleep during a longer layover.

London Heathrow

With a seemingly endless array of luxury brands on sale, Heathrow is a shopper’s paradise. With an enormous concentration of lounges, this airport is also home to several 4- and 5-star hotels within a three-mile radius. There’s also the Voyager Entertainment arcade that will help you kill some time.

Singapore Changi Airport

Renowned for its enormous indoor waterfall, this Singaporean gem is home to an array of entertainment attractions, including CLIMB@T3, where you can enjoy indoor rock climbing, and the cactus gardens, where you can breathe in some nature. There is also plenty to do for kids, including play areas, DIY projects, and interactive puzzles.

When it comes to travel, airports can either be just a place to catch your breath or an exciting part of the journey. More often than not, it’s the former—but not when it comes to these airports. Here are three of the coolest and most entertaining airports in the entire world, which will make you want an even longer layover.

Changi Airport — Singapore

Changi Airport in Singapore features incredible gardens and a rooftop swimming pool, which is already an amazing start. But if even that’s not enough for you, they literally have a movie theater there. We know where we’re traveling to next!

Munich Airport — Germany

Now, let’s talk about Germany’s Munich Airport, which has something for everyone. There’s an auto museum if you like cars, an ice rink if you’re a skater, a surfing spot if you’re a surfer, and an on-site brewery if you love kicking back with a few beers.

Incheon International Airport — Seoul, South Korea

Last but not least, we have Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea. It’s famous for its efficiency, cleanliness, and overall passenger satisfaction—but it doesn’t hurt that it also has an ice-skating rink and a casino to boot!

Generally speaking, we actually kind of like airports—there’s something about that in-between feeling of having nowhere to be and nothing to do as you wait for your flight that we find sort of comforting. Having said that, being stuck in the terminal is a lot less enjoyable when the journey to your destination contains several legs, and for these times, some airports are definitely better than others. If you’re planning a trip with a layover and have the option to choose where, read on to learn more about some of the most layover-friendly airports around the world.

Changi Airport, Singapore

Singapore’s largest airport is consistently ranked as one of the best in the world, and we totally understand why. The architecture of its terminals is a marvel in itself, only improved by the presence of lush gardens, green spaces, and even an indoor waterfall. The airport has a vacation-like feel that makes it an ideal place to just sit back and relax, but it also has a movie theater, art installations, and a wide variety of dining options for passengers looking to pass the time.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Atlanta, Georgia

The international airport in Atlanta has been the busiest global airport for over 20 years, and its layout and amenities are impeccably designed to handle all of the traffic. Boarding gates are quite spread out, and while there is a train available to shuttle passengers around, we find walking to be much more enjoyable. Between airport terminals you’ll find one of the largest public art displays in the Southeastern US, including a dedicated Zimbabwe exhibit as well as a colorful light show.

Hamad International Airport, Doha, Qatar

For layovers in the Middle East, you can’t go wrong planning your stop at Hamad International Airport in Doha. Its futuristic architecture, featuring the iconic “teddy bear” lamp, along with other installations from global artists offer passengers a taste of luxury and local culture, while sleep pods and lounges throughout the airport are available for those looking to rest between flights.

Oftentimes, when we arrive at the airport before or after a trip, it feels more like a chore than a part of the holiday fun. After all, going through security, searching for the correct boarding gate, and arriving at the gate on time can cause stress. Still, there are some unique and, believe it or not, fun airports out there that will turn your waiting time into another thrilling part of your vacation experience.

Jewel Changi Airport, Singapore

Given its glass and steel dome, elegant hallways, and the ever-tranquil Shiseido Forest Valley at its epicenter, the Jewel Changi Airport is truly befitting of its name. If the shrubbery and open spaces aren’t enough to help you feel at ease, take a moment to gaze at the airport’s breathtaking waterfall. Located in the heart of the airport, this is the largest indoor waterfall in the world.

Munich International Airport, Germany

If you’re in the mood for an active vacation, then Munich Airport will do well to satisfy this hunger with its skateboarding, surfing, and ice skating rink. For those who are more in the mood to relax, there is the Airbräu Brewery and beer garden, the first-ever brewery inside an airport.

Don Mueang Airport, Thailand

Calling all golf enthusiasts: if you happen to be catching a flight at Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport, you can enjoy a round of golf while you wait to board your flight. Situated between its runways, the Kantarat Golf Course possesses all the characteristics of a legitimate course, including water features, bunkers, and of course, luscious green grass.

Airports are the places we pass through to get from one point to another, but we’d be lying if we said that all airports are made equally. While some are so tiny that you’d be lucky to find a vending machine, others possess entire cinemas and butterfly sanctuaries (looking at you, Singapore Changi Airport).

Each year, Condé Nast Traveler asks its readers to vote for their top airports around the world. Almost a quarter of a million people took part in the 2022 survey which is now in its 35th year.

Although Singapore’s magnificent travel hub featured in the top 3, it did not claim the top spot as in previous years. The honor went, instead, to Istanbul Airport in the Turkish capital. Designed by Grimshaw Architects, the airport features not one, but two, art galleries, conference facilities, lounges, shops, and restaurants. Considering it is the busiest airport in Europe (and the second-busiest airport in the world), it makes sense that it possesses a fleet of robots to direct passengers through the 818-million-square-foot hub!

Upon receiving the prestigious title of World’s Best Airport, Istanbul Airport’s CEO and General Manager, Kadri Samsunlu, explained, “For our guests over 65 years of age, we have created a friendly airport, a pet-friendly airport, a barrier-free and accessible airport, as well as a special lounge for our young people.”

If you’ve done a lot of traveling, you know that some airports are nicer than others. In fact, some airports are so beautiful that you almost welcome a long layover so that you can hang out there more. There are tons of amazing airports out there, but here are a few that particularly caught our eye.

Kansai International Airport — Japan

Japan is known for being somewhat ahead of the curve when it comes to technology. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that this airport is as breathtaking as it is. Located on an island called Osaka Bay, Kansai International Airport was built with particularly strong materials so that it would be protected in case of a natural disaster. However, the coolest thing about it is the way it’s uniquely placed in the water.

Madrid-Barajas International Airport — Spain

Something special happens when you walk through Madrid-Barajas International Airport. There’s a certain serenity that you don’t feel in most airports, almost as if the architects planned it that way when they originally envisioned it. Using steel and bamboo, this eco-friendly airport makes you feel like you’re already backpacking before you’ve even left the airport.

Beijing Capital International Airport — China

Beijing Capital International Airport really took a step up when the 2008 Beijing Olympics came around. Eager to impress, the airport’s infrastructure was completely revamped in a way that focused on natural light. The ceiling was made with mesh skylights, which brings an especially colorful ambiance to anyone who walks through the halls. Can we live here, please?
