Oh, Starbucks. For macchiatos, cappuccinos, Frappuccinos, and more, the coffee giant is our go-to whenever we’re in need of a pick-me-up. It’s well-known that the Starbucks flagship store is located in Seattle, but over the last 50 years, the chain has opened more than 35,000 stores in 80 countries around the world. While most drinks are consistent among all Starbucks locations, some countries offer locally-inspired beverages not available anywhere else. Here are a few to look out for the next time you find yourself at a Starbucks abroad.

Melty White Pistachio Frappuccino

Nutty pistachio and rich white chocolate are a match made in heaven in this seasonal drink available at Starbucks in Japan. The milk-based blended beverage is served over a drizzle of white chocolate sauce with a special white chocolate mascarpone whipped cream on top, then sprinkled with crushed pistachio cookies for garnish. An espresso-based latte version of the drink is available as well.

Churro Frappuccino

Americans may be familiar with this so-called “secret menu” beverage, but in Latin America, it’s an official member of the Starbucks lineup. Inspired by the popular Spanish treat, the Churro Frap is made with a blend of cinnamon and doce de leite, or caramelized milk, then topped with whipped cream and even more cinnamon.

Okayama Peach Apple Cold Brew

If you’re traveling in Southeast Asia and fruity beverages are more your thing, you have to try this refreshing take on cold brew coffee. Available at Starbucks locations throughout Hong Kong, Singapore, and Vietnam, the drink features a lemonade-infused slow-steeped cold brew sweetened with a tangy peach apple syrup.

Heading to the north of Spain, Logroño is a little-known city which, despite its lack of fame, is one of my favorite places to eat and drink anywhere in Europe. From wine to tapas, this city has it all and a bright, vibrant foodie culture that any visitor to Spain should check out. Let’s learn more!

A True Haven For Foodies

The capital of the La Rioja region, the centerpiece of any conversation about Logroño and its surrounding region has to be its excellent wine. The wine region, which receives the same name as the region, produces some of the best reds anywhere on Earth using the Tempranillo grape.

Despite being the main city of La Rioja, there are wineries that you can check out nearby the city. Our favorite is Bodegas Franco, located just on the other side of the Ebro River from the center of the city. An international, world-renowned brand, you can tour its installations and sample its wines, a great idea for an afternoon spent in the city.

But Logroño isn’t just wine! Tapas are also central to its identity as a foodie haven, with the Calle del Laurel in the city’s old town serving as the home for the best bites in the city.

You will find a number of tapas bars, including the Soriano, the Bar Angel, and the Jubera, which are just a few of the many excellent spots on this street. Famous Logroño tapas include patatas bravas, mushrooms, and a small meat stick known as the pincho moruno. Try all of these as you drink beer, wine, or soda and enjoy a night with family or friends!

What are you waiting for? Logroño is ready to be discovered.

Catalonia is one of the best spots on Earth if you’re a foodie, with strong regional traditions and exceptional local products and restaurants that will leave you astounded by the flavors that this northeastern Spanish area has to offer. No trip to Catalonia would be complete without sampling these three iconic dishes.

Calçots

No winter or spring would be complete in Catalonia without an outdoor calçotada party in which people grill these local green onions in newspaper over a fire and then dip them in a special Romesco-like sauce. It’s Catalonian food at its best!

Arròs Negre

You might be familiar with the Valencian regional specialty of paella, but arròs negre is the more traditional Catalonian version. Made with squid ink that turns the rice black, this dish is heavy on the squid, garlic, and shrimp and is the perfect meal while sitting outside in the sun.

Pa amb Tomàquet

As simple as it might look, this delightful snack or breakfast food is a delight and something you must try while in Catalonia. Rustic bread is rubbed with small tomatoes, which break and spread their flavorful guts all over the bread. Topped after with olive oil and salt, this is another regional classic that you can’t miss.

The North African country of Morocco has become a trendy destination over the past decade or so as more and more flights have opened up between Europe and this fascinating kingdom in the Mahgreb. Foodies in Morocco, in particular, will be right at home as they discover all of the delights that this country has to offer. You do have to have a little previous knowledge in order to make the best of your foodie trip to Morocco. These tips will help you!

Go Where the Locals Eat

The first thing to tell you before heading to Morocco is that if you see a place full of tourists, you’ll probably want to avoid it. Instead, look to eat at stands and restaurants where the locals are flocking. This is the first sign of a great place to eat.

Stay Away from Tap Water

Unfortunately, the tap water in Morocco can be a bit dodgy and has been known to get more than a few travelers sick. Don’t eat fresh fruits and vegetables that might have been washed with tap water or drink it, as this will very possibly make you sick and unable to enjoy your foodie adventure to the max.

Learn Your Meal Times

There’s nothing worse than going out for lunch or dinner and discovering that restaurants aren’t open because of differing meal times in Morocco than in your country of origin. Dinner doesn’t usually start until around 8 or 9 pm, and lunch is typically enjoyed between 1 and 2.

Hidden in a tiny south-central Tennessee town is the home of one of the most famous beverages on Earth: Jack Daniel’s whiskey. Lynchburg, Tennessee is the home of the company and its namesake distillery, making one of the most beloved liquors on the planet at a spot that you can tour if you find yourself in the area!

Located on Highway TN-55 just outside of the center of the small town, the Jack Daniel’s Distillery was founded in 1875 and still stands to this day on the same spot where it was originally built.

Using water sourced from a spring that comes from a small cave made of limestone rock, this distillery has found the perfect liquid ingredient to make its whiskey delicious since it contains hardly any iron, a mineral that can make whiskey taste bad.

Inside the distillery, you will learn about the history of the distillery as well as the whiskey-making process that has remained largely unchanged over the past nearly 150 years.

Tour guides take you through the production areas where corn, rye, and malted barley are used to create this magical beverage, which is distilled in copper stills before being filtered through maple charcoal.

You’ll also be able to see the impressive collection of whiskey barrels which hold hundreds of thousands of gallons of the stuff at any given time at this Tennessee treasure.

Be sure to make time to visit this fascinating place the next time you find yourself on vacation in the Volunteer State!

Lisbon, Portugal, is one of our top city destinations in all of Europe. From beautiful views of the ocean to winding city streets enveloped by pastel-colored buildings, this capital city has so much charm. The Portuguese capital is also a great destination for foodies, and seafood is one of its biggest draws. Check out these three seafood restaurants that you can’t miss in Lisbon.

Cervejaria Ramiro

Made famous on Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations, Cervejaria Ramiro is the most well-known seafood restaurant in all of Lisbon. Located in a quiet, non-touristic area, this restaurant has an amazing variety of the best Atlantic seafood sourced from the Portuguese coast, including giant prawns and crabs.

Cervejaria Trindade

A hot spot in the buzzing Bairro Alto neighborhood, Trinidade is a feast for the senses. As you walk in, you’ll see massive mosaics painted on the walls of a former monastery and smell a delicious combination of butter, garlic, and seawater. People here swear by the restaurant’s cod dishes and shellfish.

Frade dos Mares

Looking for a more modern take on Portuguese seafood? Frade dos Mares is the spot for you. This restaurant puts its own spin on Portuguese staples like octopus, which is the superstar of its menu. Frade dos Mares’ Polvo a Lagareiro is a dish you can’t leave without trying.

Janine Thomas describes herself as a chocoholic, foodie, and traveler. So it makes perfect sense she combined her passions and turned it into a thriving blog.

“I am not sure which I love more—food or travelling,” reads her bio. “When you put them together it is a marriage made in heaven.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CDtNr4hgzDz/

Her website/blog/brand Gastrotravelogue breaks down what you need to know about a place beforehand, and includes travel tips, resources, and guides—with lists with tempting titles such as 10 Fabulous Wine Regions to Visit Around the World and Delicious Gifts from Paris for Foodies.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CCazvawA03N/

In an interview with Travel Awaits, Thomas shared some of her tips and tricks. “Take time to plan your trip, especially if you are short of time,” she recommends. “It makes such a difference when you arrive at an airport and don’t have to dither around trying to get to your destination. I know so many people who have an argument at that point, and it’s not a great way to start a holiday.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/B5sC1U9jrlo/

And when it comes to food travel, one country that’s at the very top of her list is Vietnam. “There are still French influences to be found like in the classics like Bánh mì, which is a crispy baguette filled with delicious pate, roasted meat and crunchy fresh salad,” she says.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Byhm_nJAN9Y/

“Each bite is heavenly. Another favorite is Vietnamese spring rolls, with a lattice-like rice paper wrapper, deep fried to puff up, surrounding a taste explosion inside. Yum!” She stresses that the food in Vietnam is regional and seasonality is important.

We can’t wait to explore more of her recommendations (when international travel is permitted that is)!

Because San Francisco has such a major Japanese population, the food scene in the city gets all the benefits. So if you are planning a trip to San Fran, these Japanese restaurants are ones you have to go to. They will completely change your view of Japanese cuisine and will leave your tastebuds on fire.

Saru Sushi

You know that if you’re going to a Michelin Guide recommended sushi restaurant, the dishes are going to be incredible. Saru is one of the best sushi restaurants in the city because they use super high-quality ingredients and every dish is made as perfectly as possible.

The attention they put into each aspect of making the sushi is another key reason that Saru stands out from other restaurants. Their rice is delicious and is grown in Japan, and their selection of soy sauces are ridiculously tasty and even includes one that is made in-house.

Halu

If you’re looking for a different kind of Japanese restaurant, Halu is one that brings a major twist. Halu is a ’60s, Beetle-inspired theme restaurant but actually isn’t too kitschy. They serve is yakitori and izakaya-style food rather than typical sushi, so if you are in the mood to have fun some and eat incredibly crafted Japanese cuisine, you have to check out Halu.

If you’re a foodie who isn’t afraid to try something new, you have to seek out these bizarre street foods.

Balut

The Philippines is an awesome country with a really unique cuisine, although one delicacy is slightly more than just unique. Balut is an egg that might look normal on the outside, but you’ll have an unusual surprise when you crack into it. Instead of it being a liquid or even hard-boiled, you will find a fertilized duck embryo, which means it’s almost a baby duck. Though it might sound intense, everyone in the Philippines and around Southeast Asia loves it and say it tastes very similar to chicken.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B18Asx8B_cQ/

Mopane Worms

There’s no doubt that if you ever go to Zimbabwe, you will definitely see people on the street eating some critter-like snack. This popular street food is called the Mopane worm, which is a worm that is harvested, deep-fried, and enjoyed at all times of the day. Since it is deep-fried, the crunch is really nice and doesn’t feel like you’re really eating a bug.

Scorpion

In some places in China like Beijing, don’t be surprised to find scorpions on a stick being offered on the street. The flavor is something like nuts or even bug-like, but you can’t deny that it’s a unique experience to be able to eat one and not be afraid of it stinging you.

Europe is one of the main producers of liquors in the world, and the citizens of this continent use all kinds of different ingredients to make unique alcoholic beverages. One of the most common fruits used in the production of liquors is cherries, which typically add a sweet and sour taste.

Here are four European cherry liquors that you absolutely must try if you find yourself trotting around the old continent.

Ginjinha (Portugal)

One of Portugal’s most famous products is ginjinha, a traditional cherry liquor originating from a monastery in the country’s capital of Lisbon. It’s typically served as a shot with a piece of fermented cherry inside of it, and it’s recently become popular to drink it out of chocolate shot glasses. Yum!

Guignolet (France)

Despite being popular within the country, you might not have ever tried or heard of guignolet if you’ve never been to France. This liquor is made with intensely sweet wild cherries, which yield a drink that is used as an apertif due to its high sugar content and its perfect use as a post-dinner drink.

Kirsch (Germany)

Kirsch is a unique cherry liquor because it lacks one of the most telling features of a normal cherry liquor: sweetness! This drink is double-distilled with full cherries, including the pits, and yields a clear liquor that’s similar in taste and consistency to vodka.

Wiśniówka (Poland)

This Polish cherry liquor is often home-made and is usually very, very strong, with its alcohol percentage frequently reaching 50%. It’s said to be an immune system booster and a remedy for the common cold. It’s certainly delicious, anyway.
