]]>Sand Mountain was once the site of one of the largest lakes in North America. Today it is a two-mile stretch of piled up sand that radiates an eerie hum as the wind blows through it. This is thanks to its very specific size of sand grains…or maybe it’s just haunted.
Right between Hidden Beach and Sand Harbor, right outside of Carson City, is a lookout point into Lake Tahoe from which you can see four iconic little trees growing out of a rock. Bonsai is the art of carefully pruning and caring for trees to keep them tiny enough to live in a flowerpot while still looking like trees. But rather than being cared for by humans, these four trees are small thanks to the harsh conditions they’ve survived for decades. Through wind and weather, they stick it out.
The Valley of Fire is Nevada’s largest national park and it’s named for its fiery-red sandstone rock formations. The park is also the site of petroglyphs dating back around 2000 years, a remnant of the Anasazi tribe who lived there until 1150 AD.

No, it is not a joke. The temperature does cool down in the fall, but Tahoe and alpine lake waters stay tolerable until mid-October. Also, there is another great water activity you can do in North Lake Tahoe; rent a flyboard and glide through the sky and water. Get your leg muscles ready!
Like swallows or storks, other animals are getting ready for the winter as well. As the temperature drops, there comes the instinctive urge for the kokanee salmon to leave the lake and go upstream to spawn. Their beautiful “migration” best can be seen in Taylor Creek. Halfway down the trail is a Stream Profile Chamber, where you can get underwater views too.
Autumn is the perfect time to put on your hiking boots and get in the woods in Hope Valley.
