]]>You can choose to start in Zambia or Tanzania, but most travelers prefer to finish in Dar Es Salaam, where you can then take a ferry or flight to Zanzibar for some beach time.
The train does not operate daily but instead operates twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays. Don’t rely on the timetable, though, because this train often runs late. You can expect to spend anywhere from two to four days on the train if you travel from start to finish without jumping off.
There are also different classes, which offer various levels of comfort. If you’re planning to do this trip, be aware that there is no air conditioning and you should bring some food with you.
While it may not be the most comfortable of rides, it does give travelers a unique look into the geography of the region. You will see the ocean, grasslands, and if you’re really lucky, some elephants roaming in the distance.

Chikanda is known as the Zambian sausage or African polony. However, it does not contain any meat, it is actually a 100% vegetarian dish made of brownish, whitish tubers of orchid that look like small potatoes and pounded groundnuts.
Kapenta is extremely important in the local diet in terms of protein. It is a small, dried fish that is fried in oil, tomatoes and onions.
