What makes a good airline? Is it how on-time their flights are? The comfort of their seats? Their food? All of the above? Bounce, a luggage storage company, surveyed these factors, plus others, for their Airline Index 2023.

The company also took into account staff service, in-flight entertainment, the percentage of cancellations, number of flights and baggage allowance.

Singapore Airlines is known for being world-class, topping numerous ranking surveys. But not this time.

According to Bounce, Japan Airlines is the best to fly with.

The national carrier earned an on-time arrival (OTA) rate of 88.36%, with only 1.56% of flights being cancelled. In regards to meals, in-flight entertainment, seat comfort, and staff service, Japan Airlines scored 4 out of 5. Where it truly shone was in the free carry-on allowance category where they received a 10.

Overall, it made up a nice score of 8.28, placing Japan Airlines in top spot.

The numbers were just not on Singapore Airlines’ side this time as they ranked second.

Typically a chart-topper, they, too, received 4 out 5 in the same categories as Japan Airlines. However, they only scored 7 out of 10 when it came to free carry-on allowance.

The one thing that Singapore Airlines’ has in their favor, though, is that they had the lowest rate of cancellations with just 0.3%. Their OTA was 77.39%, giving them an overall score of 7.63.

Rounding out the Top 5 were Qatar Airways, Korean Air, and Vistara.

Some people tune in to the Super Bowl to see which football team will claim that year’s title. Others (you know who you are) watch for the halftime show. And then there are some who are just curious about the commercials.

With the Super Bowl being prime television real estate, companies create adverts especially for the big event.

This year, United Airlines was one of those.

Super Bowl commercials tend to range from witty to tearjerkers, and United’s was definitely in the latter category.

“This isn’t a flashy Big Game commercial,” reads white text over a plain black screen. “No celebrities. No gags.”

Clips of a family then begin to play, while the text reads: “This is just the story of a family from Denver. Who got together for the holidays.” The ad continues with, “United got more families in and out of Denver this holiday than any other airline. Despite the weather. Good leads the way.”

Many are of the belief that United was making a not-so-subtle dig at Southwest Airlines which cancelled more than 15,000 flights over the holiday period. The fiasco resulted in thousands of passengers having to sleep at Denver International Airport and missing out on being with their families.

We’ll wait to see whether Southwest releases a counter ad.

During the pandemic, travel was by default at an all-time low. With countries being forced to shut down their borders, as well as airlines not creating flights, most of the world was on complete lockdown for a solid amount of time. So when the pandemic finally started to simmer down, and travel opened up again, it was too much for the airlines to handle. After laying off countless employees during the pandemic, there’s been a shortage in staff—causing all kinds of delays, and not just for the cheaper airlines.

No Airline Is That Much More Reliable

Airlines such as Delta and American Airlines used to be known as the epitome of reliability—but in the summer of 2022, there were endless delays on their end. Logjams of planes caught on the tarmac for hours on end, flights delayed days at a time, the list goes on.

As mentioned before, this has a lot to do with staffing issues, especially when it comes to pilots. Indeed, airlines are currently going through a major pilot shortage, and it’s causing all kinds of technical problems from the customer end of things.

Until things shake up, it may be a lot harder to rely on airlines in the coming future. And unfortunately, this is just as true for top-tier airlines as it is for budget options.

Flying can be an incredible experience. It can also be really bad. Many times, the difference is down to which airline you decide to use. Considering there are more than 5,000 airlines in operation, it can be a tough choice!

Each year, Travel + Leisure asks its readers to vote in a variety of travel categories, including which is their favorite international airline. They were asked to base their choices on cabin comfort, in-flight service, food, customer service, and value. Voting for the 2022 World’s Best survey took place between October 2021 and February 2022.

The winner was no stranger to the top spot. Singapore Airlines has been voted as the best for 27 years, thanks to its impeccable standard of food, service, and comfort. The airline, which has been around since 1972, travels to 78 destinations, including the 19-hour journey from Singapore to New York. Singapore Airlines received a score of 92.68.

Anyone who has flown business class on Qatar Airways understands why the airline came in second. Business class passengers are able to fully recline their seats into horizontal beds, and the Qsuite cabin offers the option of allowing four passengers to face each other in a dining-room-like setup.

Rounding out the top three was Emirates. As the largest airline in the Middle East, it operates to more than 150 cities around the world. Passengers across all cabins can enjoy over 4,000 channels on the in-flight entertainment system, ICE, while first-class travelers even have their own onboard spa.

Frequent flyer programs are a great option for travelers that take to the skies with frequency. While these programs often require quite a bit of flying to reach VIP status or to even qualify for free travel, there are some tricks that will help you reach these rewards. Use these tricks to help you accumulate points and miles for your frequent flyer program and get the most out of it!

Sign Up for a Rewards Credit Card

There are plenty of rewards credit cards that offer you the opportunity to earn miles for a frequent flyer program with your purchases. Just by spending money, you will find yourself racking status upgrades and the opportunity to travel for free if you use it regularly.

Look for Deals

Part of finding the best way to get free flights with your rewards miles is knowing when flights are cheap and when prices have gone down. These low prices correspond with lower miles requirements to get rewards tickets, a great way to use what you’ve earned.

Use One Airline

Instead of only buying the cheapest option for every flight you purchase, focus your spending and travel on one sole airline, the one you most commonly travel with. This will help you accumulate miles and status for one company instead of a little bit for several companies.
